Man, that's at least three years old, isn't it? Do we really need three year old chain emails as posts here?

Sure, if by "three years" you mean four months. That's when the contest was run.

But, then again, four months for the internet is probably comparable to years. The term "speed of light" should be replaced with some analogy to the internet.

I would think about as weird as reading this:

In my experience, it's rarely the 'affected' minority (wimminz, gheys, people of coloUr) who get all ****** it's almost always* limp-wristed overprivileged whit middle-class do-gooders.

A case in point:

I had a meeting with hippy wasters Social Workers a few weeks ago about social exclusion and was asked how I wanted my coffee. I said 'black, no sugar'.

I think you left off the part where you said "like my man". Puts the whole story in a different light. Shame on you. Smiley: oyvey

One thing I like about some of the suburbs of Atlanta . . . everyone is a minority, so no one gets special treatment. And thus Buford Highway Farmer's Market, where you can buy Asian, American, Mexican, and god knows what else groceries all under the same roof, sprung forth fully formed from the bosom of Peachtree Industrial.

I haven't heard anyone but my assbackwards Republofundy relatives in North Dakota and my in-laws in northern South Carolina use ethnic and racial slurs against anyone.

I guess also it never happened in my family because I grew up on an army base, and that **** wasn't tolerated in my father's house. ._. Rank > race in the military.

Dude. If people called me "negroid" I wouldn't invest in that town, either.

Even despite the qualifier, a hopelessly naive statement. It's one thing to claim you've never experienced it, but I can guarantee someone else has.

Yeah, or never.

Why are people such massive suckers?

The only evidence that I can find that this thing really happened is more forum posts. It's bull sh*t.

Granted it was a rather cursory look but I'm inclined to think it's BS.

PC is fine. Overly PC is not. One thing I hate is when Blacks are refered to as "african american". I've know three truely african americans in my life and two where white. Just because you are black (and not from another country) does not mean you are african american. You are simply american, just like me.

Pfft.

We should all be allowed to define ourselves, whether that's by our ethnicity, colour, heritage, sexual orientation, whatever.

If I want to call myself British, English, White, Norman, straight, European or atheist; that's for me to define, not anyone else.

Unless someone's being silly, I'll take their lead before giving them a label. I have friends whose family came here from the Punjab. They variously call themselves British Indian, British Punjabi, Anglo-Asian or plain Punjabi depending on how they feel about their heritage and circumstances - for me to pick any one of those could easily cause unnecessary offense.

I was looking at some forms from the public school system today. I noticed in the race box it had several options, but none for mixed people. So basically it's forcing people to plant themselves in a racial category. Like it or not, your race label is picked for you by society.

Isn't there usually an "other" option for just that purpose?

I would think so to, but there was no "other" option.

I generally leave those boxes blank on general principle.

Also, you're chalky white and there'd be no advantage to ticking one.

It's interesting that on the next census, and I know this b/c I get federal money for my work and have to abide by federal categorizations, they are eliminating any term that refers to Latinos. While I see the point that Latino is a term that refers to a multi-racial, multinational group rather than a race (as an American category), I wonder if there is a desire to discount Latinos as a group that is growing in both size and political and economic power so that the government can still act as if we are a mostly white/ Anglo-American country.
