I usually make a mental note when I think of one of these:

Mitigating

Inclement

Foregone

Figment

Okay, I know they're used in other ways by the verbally gifted, but these words are odd to me in that they are not overly obscure, yet their use is almost completely confined to a single, common phrase.

Any others?

I don't know, but recently I've only seen idiot used as an adjective for Gbaji.

Does that count?

We use mitigate/tion/ing in the enviro-world all the time, completely unattached from 'circumstance'.

Lately I'm becoming enthralled by a few words I haven't heard for ages then hear several times a day:

virement

enervate

disbursement

garrulous

contra-indicated

Formulary

diagnostician

metasticised

and

knob-head Smiley: um

I get the idea some of you don't actually know what's being asked, here.

He's looking for words that are used exclusively as part of a phrase.

I'm not sure what the phrase is that includes "sesquapedalian".

Edit: Not that I think most people understand the OP...

You coulda just said /whoosh Smiley: cool

But yeah, I /whooshed. I'm dog-tired

So I'm assuming the following assumptions were in play:

Mitigating circumstances

Inclement weather

Foregone conclusion

Figment of imagination

In which case:

Inveterate liar

Transcendental meditation

Tantric sex

Funting kumquat

I've never seen or read that phrase before now.

Oh, and Nobby - you missed exculpatory evidence, though that's probably more commonly used over here.

Just thought of another - labyrinthine plot.

Although, that may just stem from my reading Roger Ebert's movie reviews; he once self-consciously noted his repeated use of the phrase.
