Was talking about this with some teachers today--

What is your position on students using "cuss" words in school? Should they be punished? How? If so, which words should be prohibited? If you take the position that it's more contextual, then what contexts, and are there words that are never permissable in spite of context?

And of course... why?

Sorry if it sounds like I'm asking for an essay. Just like to get other people's opinions first before they comment on mine. You may have noticed the trend.

Have any of you non-subscribers noticed the banner on the right hand of the Alla forums for "Dragon Fable?" If you're looking at the posts and see it out of the corner of your eye, it sure does look like the "dragon" is playing chess, with himself, only using the bishop...

Anyhoot, OP, too cutesy a title to respond. Unless you're a girl.

It's the systems's, and by extension, the school's, responsibility to impose a sense of structure and social accountability on the students. It's the parents' duty to teach their kids when and how that structure can be tastefully disregarded.

If, as a teacher, I was privy to a moment wherein I felt a student had tastefully disregarded that structure by cussing, I'd let it go. But any kid that's not some tard with Tourette's shouting c-nt in the middle of algebra class is going to receive an assful of detention. Or maybe a mouthful, if she's hot.

I think the word cuss is probably my all-time least favorite word in the English language.

I think the little bastards should be dragged by the ear and forced to reside in medieval stocks in the main cafeteria for the duration of the day as an example to the other students.

Don't know about your state, but you can't just get a teaching job because you have a BA in most of the US.

Most people could never survive as a teacher, and many who could wouldn't for the laughable monetary compensation. But you know, whatever. I don't particularly care about discussing anything other than the use of swearing in school at the moment.

The nobility of failure.

Everytime one of my friends has done poorly in school and rebounds with the news "guess what I am going to be a teacher" the only response polite enough I can muster is "I'm sorry for you".

Aye except in Tares case, only cause she is purty and while tiny could probably kick my ***.

They decide this while in college? They're probably part of the 50% of new teachers who quit within the first 3 years.

Your pity is warranted.

Obviously not. The entire concept of "forbidden" words is indicative of how badly people want to be controlled. They crave structure, any kind of structure, even pointless banal ones. Punish your kid because he says ***************** sure. Punish him because he's bad at math? Never.

To make a long story short, I don't take any responsibility for anything I post here. It's not news, it's not truth, it's not serious. It's parody. It's satire. It's bitter. It's angsty. Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Though I'm sure this is over your head... I actually converse about issues rather than coming here to fling insults because the OOT doesn't allow me to get my daily dose of filterbreaking. There was no kung fu. I was being sincere.

But thank you for your contribution in turning this forum into the R-rated OOT. I imagine pretty soon we'll have a sandbox spambox, a big kids spambox, and finally the forum where adults actually talk about things that people with functional brains like to mull over.

I'm sorry, I better put it in MOAR CLEVER terms that you can comprehend.

Fuckhead.

I contribute nothing..... nothing lewbowski!

People f;ucking swear, most of us realize there is a time and a place for that type of sh'it. School is a different situation because the its kids testing there f'ucking boundaries with only minor penalties for breaking the rules while practicing airs of youthful defiance. Banning words is pretty f'ucking pointless.

That's beside the f'ucking point. The point is that you are thick f'ucking dullard who can't even frame the discussion in an interesting manner. Are we talking about the need to enforce social mores that were enforced on us, on expectations of behaviour based on social setting, about language taboo and where the line is crossed, about state employees telling peoples children what they can or cannot say. No we get a f'ucking outline of a discussion more hamfisted than a flipper baby with mits on.

So forgive me if I show you nothing short of sheer f'ucking contempt. Ask an interesting f'ucking question in an intelligent manner and get a real response. If you want to sound like deep thoughts in a freshman community college class while giving the pretense of adult conversation then get the f'uck out.

****.

Discuss it under whatever pretenses you want to. I didn't want to set up the discussion with the background because there was no way to do so without biasing the responses or revealing my position. So the OP is contrived. Deal with it.

Thanks for answering anyway, though I needed a ******* cypher to figure out what you were saying.
