Did you mean like House Rep. Bobby Rush? Or did you mean like neighboring House Rep Jesse Jackson Jr? Or other neighboring Rep Danny Davis?

Or did you mean, again, that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about? Smiley: laugh

That's it for Chicago area black House Reps, by the way. Let me know which of them came from Trinity, okay?

I don't get it. Now we're supposed to condemn people for attending church? Unless you're Episcopalian, it's almost impossible to attend a church that doesn't touch on a politically sensitive subject. Hell, I used to have a priest that told me it was my obligation to vote for George Dubya in order to preserve the sanctity of marriage. I know you can't divorce yourself from groupthink, but there are actually people out there that just go to church for the warm fuzzies and don't hang on to the very human bullsh*t that sometimes comes with church politics.

Edit 'cause the Episcopalians don't want the ghey priests.

My understanding is that Bobby Rush Pastors his own church (and has had some interesting financial issues as well). It would be interesting to see what he did before that. Oh wait! He actually was in the Black Panthers...

I think we all know Jesse Jackson. Not too far off from Wright. Just a bit smarter with the language. Don't know anything about Danny Davis. Wanna take bets that he's "cut from the same cloth"?

Every black Democrat candidate is forced to be a "black" candidate Joph. Even Barack Obama (no matter how much he tries to portray himself otherwise). Maybe it's by choice. Maybe that's just the only way the Dem party will recognize them and give them the green light to move forward. I can't say for sure, but it's a pretty clear pattern.

Which ones go to Trinity, Gbaji? You said that Obama chose to go to Trinity because it's such an important church and all the black guys who want to rise up through the Democratic Party in Illinois go there.

So now you've watered it down from "If you want to rise up through the Democratic party in Illinois" to "If you're BLACK and you want to rise up..." to "If you're black AND we're only talking federal offices..." to "Well, those black guys all go to church somewhere and that's the same thing!"

Keep moving those goal posts Smiley: laugh

I did not say that every black politician went to Trinity Joph. You've (once again) made the whole logic A->B != B->A mistake. I said that black democrats have to establish themselves as "black" candidates to go far, and Obama did that by joining Trinity church. Other black Democrats will establish those bona-fides in other ways, but it seems like they all have to do it.

One would almost think that the Democrats want to marginalize people of color or something...

No. We're "back to" what I originally said. You just choose to ignore parts of it, twist other parts around, and otherwise ignore the meaning of what I said while picking apart single sentences for alternate meanings.

It was pretty clear what I was talking about. You just either didn't get it, or choose to ignore it and argue semantic irrelevancies instead. I never said that Trinity church was the only choice. I said that Obama chose it because it allowed him to further his political career.

eh, I don't usually wander in here, but i'll bite:

Quote:
Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.

Congratulations Obama, you just described your base.

That's the whole problem with making this speech, a lot of what Reverend Wright says is simply a more fiery form of sentiments you can find on the Daily Koz or in a Noam Chomsky book. Or in English class in college.

If he makes a strong condemnation or critique of Wright's ideals, he is doing the same for influential members and ideal makers of his own party. He's too much the politician to do so, so he has to sop condemnation with dubious moral equivalents and tacking to the same old platform:

Quote:
In the white community, the path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination - and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past - are real and must be addressed. Not just with words, but with deeds – by investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations.

That already has been done, look at Wright in particular. It's no good to try and deal with race by repeating the same old trope that black anger is tied into lack of justice. This society tries its hardest to do so, and yet the anger persists, and is mutated into an irrational form. It's all right to be angry over specific grievances, but when those grievances are being attended to, albeit however imperfectly and even if other things hinder the success of the efforts, being angry is counterproductive.

However Obama can't really say "American culture has made huge strides, be patient, and be responsible for your own lives." He has to appease the base. He always has to qualify it to make it more palatable.

This whole speech is in regards to his electability as president. To win the primary, he actually will need to agree with what Wright said to placate the base of democratic kingmakers, because they really do believe things like that.

I'll quote Gbaji one last time without additional comment and let it stand on its own. You can all decide what he originally meant:
Gbaji wrote:
He fails to say what everyone already knows is true. That this church carries some significant weight politically for black Democrats in the region. If you want to advance in the Dem party in Illinois, it's a good idea to attend this church. See how that works? We all know it's true. Everyone knows this except the blind sheep out there. We all know that's why he joined.

Congratulations Obama, you just described your base.

No, the "base" of the Democratic Party are unions, not college professors. I suppose if one had absolutely no fucking idea about the demographics of the Party, you might leap to some wild assumption about what the core Democratic voter believes that makes as much sense as the KKK being the "base" of the GOP. This wouldn't be the best place to attempt to pass it off as some sort of universal truth however.

That's the whole problem with making this speech, a lot of what Reverend Wright says is simply a more fiery form of sentiments you can find on the Daily Koz or in a Noam Chomsky book. Or in English class in college.

No.

If he makes a strong condemnation or critique of Wright's ideals, he is doing the same for influential members and ideal makers of his own party.

No. You know nothing about the party. Worse than that, you've blindly accepted other people's propaganda regarding it, I'd assume because you're stupid and lazy, but maybe it's some sort of brain injury, I couldn't say.

He's too much the politician to do so, so he has to sop condemnation with dubious moral equivalents and tacking to the same old platform:

Or, it's what he actually believes. One or the other, who could say. Perhaps the situation is more nuanced than "I hate anyone who doesn't blindly support America while jerking off into an apple pie.

That already has been done, look at Wright in particular. It's no good to try and deal with race by repeating the same old trope that black anger is tied into lack of justice.

You're a delusional racist. Sorry.

This society tries its hardest to do so, and yet the anger persists, and is mutated into an irrational form. It's all right to be angry over specific grievances, but when those grievances are being attended to, albeit however imperfectly and even if other things hinder the success of the efforts, being angry is counterproductive.

Well, should that ever happen, we'll be able to make judgments regarding the rationality of the anger, I guess. Considering nothing approaching "attending" to the legitimate complaints of institutional racism against blacks has happened in this country, I suppose you'll have to agree that Wright was absolutely entitled to the anger he displayed and more. If anything, he showed tremendous restraint.

However Obama can't really say "American culture has made huge strides, be patient, and be responsible for your own lives." He has to appease the base. He always has to qualify it to make it more palatable.

He can't say it BECAUSE IT'S NOT FUCKING TRUE, idiot. Not because of some political agenda where he has to lie and pretend racism still cripples the lives of black people in this nation when really everything is just dandy.

This whole speech is in regards to his electability as president. To win the primary, he actually will need to agree with what Wright said to placate the base of democratic kingmakers, because they really do believe things like that.

Really? That's your political assessment here? Here's a tiny nugget of information for you: HE WON THE PRIMARY A MONTH AGO. He has the votes of the people you're claiming he's pandering to locked up beyond belief. There is ZERO political reason to pander to them. Which is likely why he isn't.

I can't even continue. It's too painful. On the plus side, you make Gbaji look like an observant genius, so there's that.

And where in that quote do I say it's the "only" church that fits this requirement?

I was talking about why Obama chose to attend this particular Church Joph. You've somehow transformed that into some broad assumption that this and only this one church is the "route to power" in the Dem party.

I didn't say that. You invented it inside your own head.

Obama could have chosen to attend another church Joph. But if he wanted to advance far in the Dem party, it would likely have been very similar to Trinity. And we'd be talking about some other Pastor's fiery speaches and wondering why Obama sat in that church for 20 years...

Are you really this dense? Do you regularly fail to grasp what people are talking about? Do you need me to draw a map for you?

When you repeatedly asserted "THIS church" and "everyone knows it's true" in regards to THIS CHURCH. Had you meant a class or church, you'd have posted "A church like this one" as opposed to "THIS CHURCH" Do you see yet?

Here's an example: "Gbaji looks like a fucking idiot in THIS thread" is not the same as "Gbajo looks like a fucking idiot in threads like THIS one"

See the difference? While both may be true, as is the case in the example, they're not interchangeable.

Tomorrow, we'll go over simple logic. Then again, every day, for the next 10 years if the last 5 are any guide.

Everyone knows that you are a raving socialist Smash. Everyone knows that if you want to hear the nutjob socialist position on something, you talk to Smash.

Did I just say that you are the only raving socialist? Did I say that talking to you is the only way to hear a nutjob socialist position? No. I didn't. So if someone pops up and says: "Wait a minute! There's another guy who's also a raving socialist, so you're wrong!!!", we should automatically ignore that person because he didn't get what was being said.

It's pretty basic language there Smash. It's not my fault that apparently there's a whole population on this board who can't seem to read simple English.

VERY basic, I'd say. This is clear. This isn't in dispute. This point has been made. If you want to continue this discussion, you'll have to admit that this argument has been long won by Joph and that this can't be argued in this manner you choose any longer.

Is this all clear to you?

Not at all, he's just mentally ill. Regardless of the clarity with which he's been absolutely proven wrong, he has to persist in attempting wilder and wilder explanations as to why he isn't.

I'd imagine it's why even people who are similarly inclined politically refuse to acknowledge him as anything other than an amusing lunatic.

I don't remember the GOP being color blind when Alan Keyes and Former Lt Gov of MD Michael Steel, when they ran State or National campaigns.

Seem They both Ran on the fact that they were Black and in the GOP.

So please stop saying the GOP membership, is color blind. Most of the Dixiecrats I knew in the past are now members of the GOP due to the fact that they can't accept that the Democrats have done more for minorities in recent memory.

I put up with enough Tin Hat wearers, for today. Latest thing I was told by a black male, was that Obama has already selected NY Gov. Patterson for his Vice Pres Candidate. His guy says he can't support Obama, as he is going to have someone who admits to having an affair and using drugs for V.P Smiley: lol

When I realized that the Tin Hat guys had been infected with the latest sound bites and chain emails, and nothing I said would change there mind, I couldn't stop laughing and refuse to take the bait.

They couldn't accept that being wrong. The white guy is rather upset that his opinion gathers laughs, while I am listen to, as someone who actually tries to make sure she speaks only on things she knows about. If I don't know something about I'm ask, I am willing to find the information for them. So he keeps interrupting me, just to have the last word.

Which is why I never take anything gbaji says seriously. I may feel sorry for peoples misguided ideas, but still care for their well being. This pagan live by the "Christian" Ideals of Love, Faith, Hope and Charity. Then what religion doesn't teach the same 4 values.?
