eh, I don't usually wander in here, but i'll bite:
Quote:
Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.
Congratulations Obama, you just described your base.
That's the whole problem with making this speech, a lot of what Reverend Wright says is simply a more fiery form of sentiments you can find on the Daily Koz or in a Noam Chomsky book. Or in English class in college.
If he makes a strong condemnation or critique of Wright's ideals, he is doing the same for influential members and ideal makers of his own party. He's too much the politician to do so, so he has to sop condemnation with dubious moral equivalents and tacking to the same old platform:
Quote:
In the white community, the path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination - and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past - are real and must be addressed. Not just with words, but with deeds – by investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations.
That already has been done, look at Wright in particular. It's no good to try and deal with race by repeating the same old trope that black anger is tied into lack of justice. This society tries its hardest to do so, and yet the anger persists, and is mutated into an irrational form. It's all right to be angry over specific grievances, but when those grievances are being attended to, albeit however imperfectly and even if other things hinder the success of the efforts, being angry is counterproductive.
However Obama can't really say "American culture has made huge strides, be patient, and be responsible for your own lives." He has to appease the base. He always has to qualify it to make it more palatable.
This whole speech is in regards to his electability as president. To win the primary, he actually will need to agree with what Wright said to placate the base of democratic kingmakers, because they really do believe things like that.
