Why does it have to come down to that, Kachi? Can't you vote your conscience and at the same time repudiate your grandmother's bigotry? Why would you have to vote for Obama to prove your lack of prejudice?

Well I wouldn't want to be a hypocrite.

But it seems you might have missed that I was being facetious.

I think it's almost always a factor. It may not prohibit success, but it does not in any way mean that there aren't disadvantages, or that things are fair now. It's clear from Obama's speech that he knows this, so I wouldn't get your hopes up on the end of AA. Maybe more effective allocation of federal support, but not the end of it.

Ahh, so the bar has been raised again. Next it'll have to be a black president and a completely black staff, then it'll be that and a completely black Congress, and then all that and whites will be forced to sit at the back of the bus for about 150 years. Then we'll be even-steven. Gotcha. I get it now.

/shakes his head

Keeping the blacks indebted and beholden to your party is of great importance to you, isn't it, Smash?

Perhaps, Kachi. But at the very least Sikes' humorous joke hits close to the target. It'd be time for blacks to re-examine the victimization excuse.

I actually first heard about this from my grandmother, who told me that he was un-American and not to vote for him. Unlike her, I reserve judgment til I get more facts than televised media offers. Once I got more details, it occurred to me that if I didn't vote for Obama based solely on his relationship with Wright, I'd have to disown my grandmother. Much as I love her, she is an ignorant racist and regularly says things that make me want to slap her.

So what do you think? Should I vote for Obama, or disown my grandmother?

Just slap grandma for the hell of it

Well, there are racist black people just like there are racist white people. I'd imagine the amount that change their mind about their views based on a black president would be about the same.

I realise that, being a white Frenchman, I might not be in the best position to make these comments, but surely it would be a sad thing if it did. Having a black president won't mean that the institutional/cultural racism has disappeared. I agree that playing the race card constantly, like Jesse and Al do, is a bit, well, racist. In a way. It's pointless to constantly use it as an excuse for every failing.

But it's undeniable that racism still exists. The fact that some extraordinary individuals can make it to the top is nothing really new. The fact that black people are vastly over-represented in the criminal justice system, and are disproportionally poor, is not a question of genetics. It's societal and cultural.

Why, RP, how you talk. Clearly there's no more sexism in Pakistan, after all.

Not then.

When the percentage of wealth controlled by Blacks is equivalent to the percentage of the population they make up, then we'll be "even" The current situation has 1000 times, and no that's not hyperbole, 1000 times as much wealth controlled by whites as would be proportional.

That's the problem, not strawmen that can be handwaived away.

So what's the point of even trying? You're saying that there is no realistic way for equality to happen. The end result is a cultural Zeno's paradox where you never reach your goal no matter how hard you try.

What a dismal world/life view, dude.

Sure there is, redistribution of wealth. You're saying that an entire class of people who have been systematically robbed of the opportunity to have acquired hereditary wealth, the overwhelming factor in determining current wealth should quietly accept second class status and do nothing??

What a dismal world/life view, dude.

No, what's dismal is that people accept arguments of things like Affirmative Action being "unfair" to whites.

Redistribution of wealth smacks of a zero-sum equation. Wealth shouldn't have to be taken from one group and given to another, rather, an increase in wealth across the board is the correct answer. Argue all you want about how opportunity, availability, and circumstances prevent some from attaining what the others may have, but suggesting one group be stripped of their wealth for another more impoverished group is ludicrious.

Only when you're a member of the group with the wealth.

Christ. His entire point is that too often, race is not acknowledged for the long-standing mark it left behind on a whole segment of society, and that the problem cannot be addressed simply or economically but rather is a process that involves long-term dedicated commitment to an open dialog and the generous assumption that someone not raised with your background may actually have a reason for thinking/feeling/acting the way that they do.

Sheesh. Leave it to two white men to completely miss the point. Smiley: rolleyes

Right, because you have your finger on the pulse of the experience of the black man :)

Due respect, I'm pretty sure being a Peruvian woman doesn't move you any closer to the PoV.

One of the top headlines on Google News:
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=4480868&page=1

For something called THE INVESTIGATIVE TEAM, this story seems awfully full of conjecture and misinformation. You'd think they'd actually do some investigating instead of just opining based on other headlines they've read.

This article should have been put under Opinion. ABC news has reach a new low. I stop watching them few years back.

Well, shit. I actually have to think some decent thoughts about Huckabee now.
Mike Huckabee wrote:
And one other thing I think we've gotta remember. As easy as it is for those of us who are white, to look back and say "That's a terrible statement!"...I grew up in a very segregated south. And I think that you have to cut some slack -- and I'm gonna be probably the only Conservative in America who's gonna say something like this, but I'm just tellin' you -- we've gotta cut some slack to people who grew up being called names, being told "you have to sit in the balcony when you go to the movie. You have to go to the back door to go into the restaurant. And you can't sit out there with everyone else. There's a separate waiting room in the doctor's office. Here's where you sit on the bus..." And you know what? Sometimes people do have a chip on their shoulder and resentment. And you have to just say, I probably would too. I probably would too. In fact, I may have had more of a chip on my shoulder had it been me.

I began reading Joph's OP with a preconceived notion of what it would entail. I'm walking away with a very different perspective.

I'm pretty damn liberal. But until recently I suppose I've still been too prejudiced to think Obama had a chance at winning. It's not that I thought he didn't deserve to win, or that he wasn't qualified or of a strong enough character, just that because of the current state of racial equality in the US he didn't have a chance.

Maybe it was because of some inbred racism on my part, or perhaps a lack of faith in America's ability to see beyond color, or for lack of faith in Obama himself, but after reading that speech I can say wholeheartedly that I would be proud to have him as president. Even if he is a niggah.

He is some kind of awesome.

If the speech was ghostwritten, that writer seriously needs a raise.
