The wife and I are getting ready to go on a trip south of Cancun and decided to stop by Books-a-Million to pick up a few good, easy reads. Walked in, looked around and found nothing good in the "new" paperback section. Figured I would fall back on a Clive Cussler novel. Found one that I haven't read and proceeded to head to the checkout. On my way there I saw the new "Bourne" hardcover book and grabbed that too.

That's when I noticed the price... $32.00 for the Ludlum novel and $15.95 for an Clive Cussler paperback. Jebus, when has paper become so friggin pricey??? and for trash novels???

Time to get a library card.

Or go to a used book store.

I rarely buy new books anymore.

Yeah, if I'm looking for a specific book, Amazon will usually offer up a used copy through some lil bookstore somewhere. Can usually pick up most anything for less than five bucks including shipping.

If heading out to travel though, I don't spose you have time to wait for the mail. I like magazines for travel reading.

Have fun in the sun;)

It's called inflation.

You seriously didn't expect book prices to stay at their mid-90's levels (about $6 for a 16mo paperback, about $10 for a 8mo paperback) forever, did you?

Paperback or softbound? Amazon has (new) Clive Cussler paperbacks for $8-$10. Which is still more than I'd want to pay for a paperback but I guess them's the breaks.

I steal all my books from hospitals. I always promise myself I'll return them when I'm done, but I never do. RACK me.

Yeah, they're all wallowing in self-pity and moaning about how bad they feel. That just means they can't appreciate the chance to lay in bed and read a good novel. So I take 'em. I, at least, appreciate a good book.

Thrift shops are actually good places for books, too.

I'll usually stop in Goodwill or another local thrift shop and pick up some new material.

Paperbacks are typically .50 ~ 3.00.
Hard cover 1.00~5.00 for the big ones.

This is the right answer.

Except for classics you will read/pass on.
