National Geographic reports a New Zealand Dolphin named Moko, guided some stuck whales back out to sea.
Quote:
"Moko just came flying through the water and pushed in between us and the whales," Juanita Symes, another rescuer, told the Associated Press. "She got them to head toward the hill, where the channel is. It was an amazing experience."

Anton van Helden, a marine mammals expert at New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, said the reports of Moko's rescue were "fantastic" but believable because dolphins have "a great capacity for altruistic activities."

The story seems to be lacking in detail, but do you think the dolphin and whales really had communicated in some way to coorperate in this endevour?

Do you think dophins are empathetic to the plight of other animals, be it humans, whales or whatever, enough to know what the problem is and to solve it?

I like dolphins.

I read somewhere that the dolphin's fins show they actually made it out of the water and unto land, and then "decided" to go back into the sea. And you can see why, there are plenty of advantages in being in the sea: free food, lots of space, and moving in water is not only a lot less tiring than moving on land because of the lesser gravity, it's also a lot more fun. Clever animals.

Of course, they're not that clever as they didn't forsee that humans would come about and ***** up their ecosystem completely while making tuna out of them, but still, for a mammal, not bad.

As a follow up I was just listening to NPR's RadioLab. They were talking about laughter. One scientist had been trying to figure out what the meaning of some sounds were that he had recorded young rats making while apparently playing with other young rats. He was able to reproduce the noise by tickling the rat.

Was the rat laughing?

Maybe but I'm not sure how you'd test the results. What else to rats find funny that you could show them and wait for the same sound? Old episodes of Cheers?

I was surfing with a friend this arfternoon and for the whole 3 hours we were in the water we had 2 of these maui dolphins hanging around us....close enough to touch and look in the eye.

Sadly theres only a hundred or so left in the wild.Smiley: frown

They surf pretty well too....Tho they refuse to abide by the 'drop-in' rule.

If I move to New-Zealand, can you provide a hut and a sheep for me?

And maybe a couple of dolphins, too...

I'm all hot in the pants right now.

Seriously though, I'd love to move to New-Zealand one day. It's a bit far away from civilisation, but the orcs and the dolphins will easily make up for it.

Nor should I strike you as a 39 year old from Manchester, but I can see how the whole "************ dolphins" bit had you confused.

But no, not me, sorry to disappoint.

I believe dolphins are capable of the empathy and intelligence enough to help rescue a stranded whale. There are plenty of documented cases of them doing the same thing for humans who's boats have sunk.

They also seem to be diverse enough to have the capacity for selfishness and brutality, as well as kindness. There is also plenty of evidence of them ganging up and bullying or beating other dolphins, and engaging in gang-rape.

As for Alan Cooper (urk), I remember a case going the other way. A human male diver wearing one of those cut-off thigh high wet-suits that people wear in warm waters got raped by a male dolphin. The dolphin inserted his ***** up under the wetsuit material and pleasured himself till he orgasmed. The poor human diver wasn't a strong enough swimmer to be able to get away from the dolphin earlier.

We need Doug here to trot out that long dolphin-lover meme.

I was quite happily swimming around with the dolphins when she suddenly decided to grab my foot with her genital slit. Dolphins have very muscular vaginal orifices, and can use these muscles to manipulate objects and carry them. I stayed still for a while, to see if she was just playing, but she continued to ********** against my foot, and in the light of the torch I sometimes carry, I could see that her slit had become very pink and had swelled as well. She was aroused!

So, I started to back-paddle with my hands towards a small beached area, partially submerged in the water. A couple of times she pulled me forward into the deeper water, but eventually I got my self to the shallows. I dislodged my foot (Being careful not to pull too hard), and took her gently by a pectoral fin and rubbed her belly just to aclimatize her, I guess. She immediately rolled belly up and started doing pelvic thrusts against the palm of my hand. It was unmistakebly erotic, and by now I was fully aroused.

I stripped off my shorts, and gently pulled her into the shallows until she was lying on her side, her belly facing towards me, half submerged in the water. I nestled myself belly to belly against her, and pressed my member against her genital slit. She immediately arched her body against mine, and took me inside her body, initiating a quick series of muscular contractions with her vaginal muscles. I wrapped my left arm around her body and just held her close while she manipulated me inside her body, until I climaxed barely 2 minutes later. Surprisingly, her body also shuddered against mine, and we spent the next 5 or so minutes just lying together in the shallows, holding each other, enjoying our company and revelling in the fact that we had shared something special together, something very few people can claim to have done.

Mrs. Yoyo and I went whale watching last weekend off the Channel Islands (the USA version, not the England/France version).

After observing a pair of humpbacks repeatedly breaching and generally frolicking in an energetic and playful display over the course of about an hour, we were lucky enough to find a very large pod of common dolphins feeding. From a distance, it looked like a large patch (roughly circular) of water was boiling. This was in part due to the large flock of birds feeding. As we got closer, dolphins appeared all around the boat. Literally close enough that as they were leaping out of the water I heard one. As the boat motor started up, and the wake spread out behind what must have been dozens of them surfed the wake. The crew estimated the size of the pod at 500.

Although the crew said the humpback display was one of the finest they had seen in 10 years, I'd rather watch the dolphins.
