One of the other pilots I work with here was an original band member of the old punk bank Black Flag. Yeah, those guys! He played bass for them for a while, left, went to another band called The Alcoholics, and eventually decided to join the Navy to become a helicopter pilot.

Nobby, I imagine you're fairly up on punk bands, right? The Ramones, Sex Pistols? As you probably know, Black Flag was the first punk band in the US to make a name for themselves. Many here still consider them to be the Rolling Stones of the punk scene, whereas The Ramones would be the Beatles.

Anyways, he was telling me some funny stories about playing in the Whisky-a-Go-Go, a prominent club in LA where a lot of up and coming bands go to get noticed.

Wasn't that Henry Rollins' band?

Looked it up, I guess he took over for the lead singer after he left in '81. I didn't realize Rollins wasn't the original for that group.

Yeah, John says they pretty much sucked before then, but they had a blast playing gigs out mon the West Coast. In one of his stories he says this guy crawled up on stage and started biting his guitar, so he busts him over the head with a beer bottle. Apparently it was just another night with the punkers.

Smiley: bowdown DAMAGED was the first piece of vinyl I ever imported from Americaland.

I'm going to have to setp up my game to keep with awesome name dropping of that calibre.

John who? I can't think of a bassist named "John" that played for them.

I'm sure their personnel changed fairly frequently, though.

I take money from the asshat that fronts Godsmack on a regular basis. Every time I do, he tells me how unimportant it is because of his band money. I still couldn't name a Godsmack song if you put a gun to my head.

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

John was with Black Flag when they were just beginning-- fresh out of (and I guess still in) the garage back in Redondo Beach. I think he mentioned the year 1974 among all the other stories and stuff he was telling me.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. I was giving him a tune-up in backgammon and we started BSing about high school and beyond. He casually mentions when I mentioned something about harmonicas that he plays bass, so I ask for how long? He said since he was a little kid, but didn't get serious until early high school. Then he asked if I had heard of Black Flag and I say, "Yeah." "Well," he tells me, "We started that band back in my old neighborhood. Good times!"

This thread only serves to remind me that a)Henry Rollins is coming to town and I can't make the show and b) It has been a year since I lent out my photo edition of Get in the Van /mourn.
