I've played it, and it's possible that I didn't really give it a fair go, but I couldn't get into it. I'd recommend X3 though if you're looking for that sort of space empire building game, although they're certainly different enough that you might like both.

Like I said, I'm not a huge gamer. Probably the three PC games I've dedicated the most time to in my history is Everquest, Civilization II and Medieval: Total War. I'm not a big fan of twitch play or complex "You can only win with this simultaneous mouse/keyboard set-up" type things. I didn't mind the real time battles in M:tW because they didn't seem twitchy.

It's certainly in the vain of a Civ in Space type game. I didn't find the tactics of the combat system very deep at all. It's the simplest rock paper scissors set up, it's not a space combat sim in any way shape or form, while there are real time battles, they're all 2d, and managing them yields virtually no advantage to just letting the AI has it out. The tech tree is large, but much of is essentially "ships lazer plus 99". It's gotten really great reviews from lots of people who's opinion I vaguely respect though, so I think it's worth the $20 or whatever people pay for games these days.

Nothing wrong with my Google! Its just that i always get berated for not providing links, and it was my chance to exact some rewenge.

I've never tried those space conquest type thingies. I like my axes and swords and stuff too much. And I struggle to equip myself with half decent personal armour as it is. The thought of trying to fuel an inter-galactic battle cruiser around the place with oil costing $107 a barrel....Smiley: jawdrop

Speaking of wich, anyone lookin forward to Age of Conan? I pre-ordered mine the day before they knocked the release date back by 3 months. Its looking pretty sweet and just may get me out of Middle Earth for a bit.

Bewbs and beheadings FTW!

I loooooove 4x games, make it a Space Empire 4x and I'm in heaven, so I purchased it. It's ok, not great, but not bad. Two of the things it claims to be the "decendant" of is MOO and Homeworld. If anyone has the gall to tell you that in person: kick'um in the nuts, it's a lie. It is an RTS game (and I hate RTS games), but you can vary the speed and at normal speed things don't move to fast, so that's not that big of a deal. As Smash mentions the Tech tree isn't anything to crow about and combat is strictly two dimensional and... uh, two dimensional. Ships will use the Z plane to get out of each others way, but there is no advantage or point to it otherwise and, as he said, it's strictly rock, paper scissors. On the otherhand the game is easy to learn (no MOO3, here), the graphics are pretty and, uh I can't think of a third thing to make it good.

My opinion? Go pick up "Sword of the Stars" or "Galactic Civilizations II" for $20 and wait til "Sins" drops to $20, in six months to a year, before picking it up.

Galactic Civilizations II"

Seconded. If you haven't played, that's a cheaper, better, choice that you'd probably enjoy more.
