Unless the New York Times is just making loads of random stuff up about him, the man held some very, very unusual opinions. Legalizing marijuana I knew about, but tatooing people with AIDS, purging universities of athiests and leftists and defending McCarthy I was unaware of.
The champion of American "conservatism" should have approved of Bush Junior's policies hardily, which is perhaps the greatest slight I can think of.

In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
He may have had some extreme opinions, but he was not an asShole about it, unlike a couple of the more prominent right wing speakers today.

He supported segregation. When pushed (e.g um, how can you discriminate on the basis of race) he claimed only the educated should have the right to vote. How convenient.
On the positive side, even he came around to oppose the Iraq war, leaving him miles ahead of the Republican party as a whole.

Yes he was, but an articulate one, at least. The current crop of "conservative" pundits don't have that going for them instead substituting mock outrage for argument.
