Unless the New York Times is just making loads of random stuff up about him, the man held some very, very unusual opinions. Legalizing marijuana I knew about, but tatooing people with AIDS, purging universities of athiests and leftists and defending McCarthy I was unaware of.
The champion of American "conservatism" should have approved of Bush Junior's policies hardily, which is perhaps the greatest slight I can think of.
