I know you've all heard that the NY Philharmonic just finished up a concert in North Korea...so I'm not gonna bother with a link.

Condi, also in the far east parleying with the powers, has pretty much stated that the lil' concert was nice and hopefully there can be more cultural exchanges BUT not until NK abides by it's agreement to abandon it's nuclear activity.

Critics are touting the visit as merely a propaganda coup for Kim.

If nothing else myself and others across the interwaves have now seen some recent photos of Pyongyang, and I've always found positive reinforcement to work much better than punishment.

So, are cultural exchanges something we should persue even with countrys that are out of compliance with our wishes?

Will these types of good will gestures serve to give Kim more coersive power with his own people?

I understand the country has next invited Eric Clapton to come visit and do a show for them. Smiley: lol

Actually, I understand that there has been an effort to conduct a "luxury embargo" on N. Korea. The thought being that Kim Jong-Il doesn't care if his people are eating dirt and rocks but, if we cut off his personal supply of iPods, Blu-Ray DVD players and Hot Pockets, he'll actually take notice. I assume (giving the benefit of the doubt) that this falls under the same line of thinking but, out of that context, it does sound silly to say "No orchestra for you!"

I'm thinking if Kim wanted an ipod he could get one embargo or not. Seems we give them all ipods, flat screen tv's, sUperfast internetz, the North Koreans, like the rest of the enlightened world, will be too busy watching You Tube to worry about silly ol nuclear weapons.

Hey, if bringing a group of NK students to the US on tour is the only way of breaking them of the brainwashing they go through over there, I'm all for it. I've seen pictures of Pyongyang (have you seen their Unfinished Hotel of Epic Fail?) and it's so . . . dead compared to even a small US city. Not just the lack of cars or people, but the lack of a vibrant life.

You know it was thought about the moment it was read by anyone who got it. *snicker*
