Barack Obama's campaign yesterday accused Hillary Clinton’s aides of engaging in “shameful, offensive fear-mongering” by distributing a photograph of him in a turban and tribal costume.

The Clinton camp responded swiftly, saying it was unaware of any such picture and that it was Mr Obama’s team that “should be ashamed”. They accused her rival of making a “transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country”.

The row was sparked by a photograph appearing at the top of the Drudge Report — a political gossip website which is no friend of the Clintons — showing Mr Obama dressed as a Somali elder during a visit to Kenya in 2006. The accompanying report claimed the picture was being circulated in e-mails by “stressed Clinton staffers”.

Mrs Clinton’s aides were furious at the prospect of her foreign policy speech in Washington being overshadowed by a row which, they suspect, had been deliberately concocted. Some even expressed doubts that the e-mail referred to by Drudge existed.

The full article can be found here.

If the Clinton campaign did indeed stoop this low, I would have to agree that this is one of the most shameful things done to try and win an election. Let's hope that people haven't fallen to this level of fear-mongering quite yet.

Ya, right.

Ugh, how stupid and immature. Their bickering back and forth makes me not want either one of them in office.

Maggie Williams issued a non-denial when asked about it earlier essentially saying "You shouldn't want to talk about it, so there". Howard Wolfson has since issued a quasi-denial saying (again, paraphrased) "We don't know if it came from our campaign but we didn't ask for it to happen".

If true, it would be seriously troubling that a presidental candidate who would be expected to negotiate with Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey, Palestine, Pakistan, Kosovo, etc would insinuate that being Muslim is a reason not to vote for someone. But I'm not completely convinced that it IS true and would like Drudge to lend some evidence to his claims. I expect I'll be a long time waiting though.

You're a good argument for IQ tests being required of voters.

Isn't this Drudge guy a Republican anyway? Looks to me like he's just stirring **** up, putting up this picture and then saying its the Clinton camp.

Cos if it is the Clinton camp, they are fUcking dumb. It's such an innocuous picture. As if people who were gonna vote for Obama would be put off by him wearing a traditional Kenyan costume. They're not likely to think "Well I was gonna vote for him cos he seemed like a nice Irish boy, but now..."

Dunno. But American politics is nothing if not entertaining.

If the Clinton camp is to be believed AND if Drudge is telling the truth, the obvious assumption is that it was a few disgruntled Clinton volunteers working on their own free will and thinking, in their addled minds, that they were doing Hillary a favor.

Which does seem the most likely scenario to me. There's plenty enough shouts and mud slinging from the rank & file on both sides that I can imagine such a misguided and unofficial smear attempt.

Of course, the side argument is: Why would anyone be offended by this?

Doesn't objection to the photograph also assume that there's something "wrong" about a candidate wearing those sorts of clothing?

No, it assumes that the people who freak out cos Obama went to a Madrassa will freak out when they see him wearing a turban.

So basically, it assumes that people are stupid racists. And many are. But they tend to vote Republican Smiley: wink

Because if it WAS (for sake of argument) released by the Clinton camp, the corollary side argument is: "Why would they release such a photo?" -- Presumably the reason would not be to laud Obama's fine diplomatic skills and contacts abroad.

Given the persistant rumors of Obama's Muslim faith including two Clinton staffers who were fired for forwarding along the "Obama is a Muslim" e-mails and the supposed Clinton input into the Insight article falsely claiming that Obama attended a radical Madrassa as a child and the endorsement of Obama by Louis Farrakhan (whom Obama has publically rebuked) the night before, it's possible that one might suspect foul intent in waving about a photo of Obama in what, to most casual observers, would count as "Muslim dress".

In that context, the question of "Why would anyone be offended by it?" seems to either indicate a certain level of disingenuousness or else a real problem with grasping the obvious.

Sure. But they're not doing it because they think Obama is a Muslim and that this somehow affects them. They're doing it to stretch out the race, realizing that every minute that Clinton and Obama snipe at eachother benefits McCain.

Interestingly enough, every article I could find on this mentioned that Republicans would vote for Clinton to stretch the primary process out, or they'd vote for Obama because they see him as an easier candidate for McCain to beat. Hmmm....

It's not all about you Joph. I was going after Reds wonderfully assumptive argument that the racists who'd be influenced by said photo mostly voted Republican. Now that you and I both agree that this is not the case, I'll just consider my job here finished...

Apparently Air America or some offshoot of it is back on the air in Chicago. The other morning I heard the absolute worst show on there. Or anywhere. It was some woman trying to combine hack political commentary with "morning zoo" antics.

"So can you believe what Bush was doing? (sound of toilet flushing) What a clown! (slide-whistle) He actually thinks we should renew the FISA bill (monkey calls followed by an old-time horn honking)..."

Yeah, Gbaji got one right there. Must have been a Solar Eclipse that day or something.

No, the only Brit I remember was Sue Ellicot on Morning Sedition. Her voice was like a choir of angels. But she left the show long ago, as far as I know.

This was some new (to me) annoying broad.

1) It was a joke, hence the "Smiley: wink"

2) Even within the joke, there's a "but". "But they tend to vote..." Thereby implying that even if that picture was meant to deter "racists" from voting for Obama, it would be pointless because the "racists" in question vote Republican. And hence don't vote in the Dem primaries.

Lack of humour and rating down I expect, but you could do without the complete retardation on top of it.

Oh... Well, since it was just a joke...

It was the "but" part that I have a problem with. It's like saying "Fried chicken appeals to poor people, but they're mostly black anyway..." and then wondering why a black person might be offended by this. After all, you were just making a joke, right?

After the zillionth time someone makes a statement like yours that blanketly assumes that Republicans are racists and Democrats aren't, it gets beyond just old. The joke ceases to be funny. It really does. Moreso because it's just plain false. But because so many people just assume it's true, even when faced with something like what Clinton's campaign did, they *still* find a way to imply that Republicans are racist.

So yeah. That's annoying as all hell. Can we just accept for one moment that a group of Dems, committed a grossly bigoted act? Can you please do that *without* finding someway to slide the badness onto Republicans? Just once?...

Nah. Jokes about Republicans being racist morons never get old.

Why do Republicans love doing laundry?
They're naturals at separating the whites from the colors.

Ah yeah, I see what you mean.

Sorry.

I apologise for being so insensitive to the plight of Republicans in the US. I almost forget the centuries of slavery and blatant discrimination you guys suffered at the hands of Democrats. It was really a dark period in history, and one we must never forget. Just like blacks, mate, I feel your pain.

Obviously, jokes are only funny if they are true. That's indeed the whole point of jokes, and it's precisely what seperates them from non-jokes, such as statement of facts.

Instead of saying ridiculously stupid stuff, you could just grow a thick skin and not get your panties in a twist you soft ***** southern pansy fairy. Seriously, a joke about republicans on the Asylum?! Me taking the **** out of you?! No way! Call Nixnot! And then I can report all the WWII/surrender monkey jokes, and Katie all the miscarriage jokes, and Joph all the liberal defamation, and then we can all go hang out in the OTT and make threads about which super powers we'd like to have.

In other words, GFY you stupid ****. 14k of posts, you really shouldn't get "annoyed as hell" for cheap shots like these.

I can accept the Clinton camp committed a petty and stupid act which relied upon the ignorance and latent racism of stupid people.

Because, if there's one thing we can probably both agree on, it's that only ignorants and racists would find that picture anything else than completely innocuous, right? I mean, what normal person would give any importance to a picture of Obama dressed in a traditional dress during a trip? Who, in their right mind, would find that picture "disturbing"?
