Week 2 of the baby's outside existence commences. Much the same as before; he nurses a lot, sleeps a lot, cries a little. We've had family coming over to visit all the time, bringing lots of goodies for the guy. The apartment has just exploded in baby clothes! It's everywhere. He still sleeps in bed with us so he has easy access to mommy's milkbags during the night. His crib has for the most part been extra storage for clothes and blankets. Our three cats love this arrangement and keep sneaking into the crib to sleep on the laundry.
Well, one day as we were changing the little prince in bed I looked over and, without thinking, stated "The cat's in the cradle."
Now, my wife claims that she still can't grasp the fact that we have our very own baby, forever and ever. She's mostly still just shocked about the delivery; but we're doing a good job of taking care of him. What struck me, though, when I uttered that line is that this wee little baby, who spends so much time suckling boobies, making scrunchy faces and pooing, is eventually going to turn into a person. He's going to be somebody, with his own personality, his own thoughts, his own future.
That is what I'm having a hard time comprehending. for now, though, I'm just enjoying my little man while he's still small, easily handleable and can't talk back.
Though the little bugger does manage to backhand me occasionally!

Having a child is (I hear) taking a step outside yourself and never quite thinking you're that important again. I'm about 3/4 of the way there with a stepchild, and were I to have a biological child that required all of my attention due to some unfortunate circumstance, the stupid forum would be the last thing on my mind.

Meh, if I wanted to read the most recent updates on acquaintances kids I'd actually pay attention to the Christmas letters I receive in the mail every year. Call me bitter (in honesty this could be it), but I'd rather read "The Great Gabji vs. Smash" debate most days. I think kids are great, I don't mind the "Hey meet the new family member" posts, I'm just not a fan of all the "ZOMG my kid is Einstein" posts that follow.
