So Dracoid was linking pictures of men he thinks look beautiful on MSN* , and we got to talking bout Queens of the Stone Age, then the Mars Volta. Two bands I have seen and enjoyed, it went on and I got hooked up with some new music and links to Saul Willams.

DSD mentioned Stardust which turned out to be a good read, even if the movie was only so so.
Now that my Ipod is a lil fuller, my book shelf a little more cluttered I need more! Sell me on the thing that you are loving this instant. Make with the awesome.

As far as movies go, I loved Sweeney Todd.

Books, I would have to say basically anything by S. King. That guy is an amazing writer.

I'm currently reading The Contortionist's Handbook by Craig Clevenger. Linky
However, unlike Chuck Palahniuk I don't think it's the best book I've read in 5 to 10 years.

But, I'm not done with it yet.

I'm also 4 seasons deep into The Wire, which is quite possibly the most impressive body of television work I've ever seen.

Edited cause my linking skill fail.

While I can't say S. King has written anything that I'd consider "the best", I shaw The Shawshank Redemption again the other night on HBO, and it still stands as one of my favorite movies.

Morgan Freeman is so dreamy when he's sad! Smiley: inlove

I realize I wrote "shaw" instead of saw, but I'm leaving it in there.

QotSA had such an amazingly disappointing album, I have fostered a burning hatred for Dave Grohl ever since.

If not for Nirvana and The Colour and the Shape, he'd so be out of my club.

The Child Garden, by Geoff Ryman.

This is not only stunningly inventive sf, I can say that without a doubt it's going to be on English Lit. reading lists for the next 500 years.

The future Earth he creates is thoroughly weird, his heroine has a completely unique story. Everything is beyond strange and interesting.

I came out of reading that book not just touched, but altered.

For the bookshelf:

- Guns, Germs and Steel : you might have read it since you did anthropology, but its really a fascinating analysis of how the world came to be the way it is today. It answers questions such as: why did the Spanish end up conquering America, and not the other way round? Awesome read.

- The Horsemen: One of the most epic books ever written about Afghanistan, by a guy who spend a good few years living amongst some Pashtun tribesmen. Absolutely awesome.

- The Great War for Civilisation, by Robert Fisk, is quite extraordinary too. It helps to make sense of all the crap going on in the ME. Brilliant journalist, too.

For the Ipod:

- Below the Bassline, Earnest Ranglin. Legendary Jamaican musician, legendary album.

- The Libertines. Easily the best British rock band to have emerged this last few years. Shame they only did two albums, but most of their best tracks are on this.

- How to turn a crap song into a great one.

For the eyes:

- 36 Quai des Orfevre. Dark and cool police thriller like we don't make them anymore. Top film.

- The Wire. Can't believe I've only discovered this now. Such a cool show. Gritty, realistic, full of aSsholes, awesome.

- Keeley. Need I say more?

The Almost is a spectacular band to check out, if you haven't already.

Project 86's old stuff is along that line as well.

I am pleased to see 2 mentions of The Wire. (esp. from Red) The Wire: bringing the Bmore ghetto to exotic places.

I've been tempted for awhile to make a thread about it.

My girlfriend are I are totally hooked on it. I've been telling my mates about how cool it is, promising to lend them the DVD as soon as we're done. But now I think I wanna watch it again with the Director's comments. I can't help but feel that half of the slang/references are going straight over my head.

Still, best series I've seen in a long time.

Dunno if graphic novels are big in the US, but these are a few gems for those that like the genre:

Persepolis: The true story of an Iranian girl born in Teheran a few years before the cultural revolution. Clever, topical, and very informative. They're even making a movie out of it.

Ordinary victories, from Larcenet. Like a french movie, but in graphic novel format. Cute, funny, sad, life. Everything from that writer is funny and touching.

Anything by Enki Bilal, The Nikopol Trilogy is especially beautiful. It's sci-fi, if anything.

And for those that can read French: Le grand pouvoir du Chninkel is epic. Beautiful, well-written, some old themes, but very nicely executed. One of my all-time favourite.

Congrats on checking out Saul Williams. That Sunday, bloody Sunday cover is possibly the best ~3 minutes of audio I have heard in a long time.

For music, the two things I would suggest are:

Jake Speed & The Freddies if you like light-hearted folk/ragtime influenced music. Some songs to check out are Talking F' word blues, No way Jóse, Volvo Girl, and New Hands of Change. Some of those can be found on their myspace page.

The other is Birdy Nam Nam. They are good, check them out.

Books wise, I have been reading some stuff by Christopher Moore. They are easy, light reads, but he does humour well, and stories involving a blue prostitute and vampires usually are for the better.

Finally, if you haven't watched any episodes of Weeds yet, check out seasons 1 and 2. They start getting a little weak in the middle of season 2, but the ending is well worth it. I am in S3 right now, and it is disappointing. For some reason, they are trying to tackle religious belief -v- modern morals, and it is not coming off as believable. Plus, Mary Kate Olsen does not play the best fundamentalist Christian/pothead.

When I want to go be entertained, I go back to the classics and there is no greater director than Fellini. I always discover something new about 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits and La Dolce Vita. I would also suggest seeing John Cassavetes' early films, like Shadows, Rules of the Game (by Renoir--probably the greatest movie of the WWII era) and 70s adaptation of the Decameron.

Jonwin been watching The Wire, and I catch what I can, but need to sit down when I can to watch it all the way through. He's now watching it with commentary, so I somethings catch an episode I hadn't seen, due to him having too much time to fill, while on bed rest.

For books we, both been hook on the 1632, 1633 and Grantville Gazette and all of the 1634 books.

In fact you may find that Eric Flint with several other writers he collaborate with. I found him though David Weber and together they led me to John Ringo and Dave Freer among many others.

As for Music, I'm still loving ego likeness. I was able to get the 13th out of 300 copies of South.

I dig QotSA - I like Lullabies to Paralyze and Songs for the Deaf.

I got hooked on Gary Jules from his version of "Mad World" so I picked up his albums on iTunes: Greetings from the Side, his self-titled, Gary Jules, and Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets.

As for movies, last weekend I rented Stardust - from all the negative feedback on the movie, I wasn't expecting much. It turns out I enjoyed it very much. I didn't realize it was a Neil Gaiman story, so I definitely want to read the book now.

I also rented Sunshine which was a decent sci-fi flick - there were parts that to me were illogical, but overall it was a decent effort.

For a goofy, fun spoof comedy, check out The Comebacks - David Koechner is a funny mother fucker.

As for books, I'm currently reading Making Money by Terry Pratchett and it's enjoyable so far - but then, I am rarely disappointed with anything by Pratchett.

My current obsession (well, not really obsession) is the new Terminator Show. It's the first prime time show I've watched religiously since Boy Meets World. Sorry I don't have any recommendations for books or other tangible offerings.

Edit: I lied. I totally forgot that I'd recommend any of this guy's books to anyone. I never think about it when people ask for book recommendations, because I don't really read any fiction type stuff.
