I have been thinking about who McCain will choose as his running mate with the very real possibility of a Hillary-Obama or Obama-Hillary democratic ticket. McCain is faced with the very real possibility of being deemed the old white man candidate and losing a lot of potential votes just to those looking to make history with the first black/female president/VP or VP/Prez. The thought occurred to me that to best counter that sentiment he would need someone who is qualified and also not old, white or a man. The obvious choice is Dr. Condoleezza Rice. Which would make the ticket a very catchy McCain-Rice, which also sounds like a nice side dish.

Gulliani. It's been fairly obvious since he dropped out and declared his support for McCain.

At this point its pretty much up for grabbs as to who he will choose. The primarys are not quite over and he could make some huge blunder and loose.
I'd have to say he has to get a young popular person for his back up. Rice is a distinct possibility.

I'm sure you're a lovely person, but you clearly know absolutely nothing about politics.

Even though McCain is a baptist, there are many that assume he is a catholic since his last name is McCain. Choosing Gulliani as a running mate would make the ticket look like a Catholic-Catholic to the uneducated voter and this would hurt him in many states. Since the uneducated voter is the majority in many of these same states, picking Guliani as a running would not be a wise choice. Gulliani instead could expect a cabinet post appointment should McCain win.

McCain would be crazy not to select someone that the conservatives like.

Conservatives would hate it. They already think that electing McCain would be the end of the republican party because he's too far left. It wouldn't help to have a socially liberal PR nightmare on his 4th marriage as his running mate.

I doubt it. If Obama wants a white chick at his side, he's already admitted that Kathleen Sebelius is on his short list for potential Veeps. And it'd be a waste of his time to sit around the White House for eight years while Clinton & Clinton play presidental pairs.

So you'd balance McCain's moderatism (if that's not a word, it should be) with extreme conservativism like, say, Huckabee?

*I* wouldn't do anything of the sort. I actually can't imagine that being a particularly viable ticket (too far apart ideologically), unless the far righties are planning on assassinating McCain.

It's a strange combination, but McCain needs to do something to capture the evangelical/very Conservative voters.

Actually, I think that Governor Pawlenty would be a very good VP contender for McCain. Tommy Thompson might score him points with the conservatives, too.

I'm actually inclined to agree with it's view. McCain is a stubborn, self-righteous old goat. He has pretty much stated to conservatives that he and they won't always agree, but that they should trust him to lead. He has apparently discovered that the support of the evangelical right + 25 cents will buy you a cup of coffee in the current climate. I wouldn't be surprised if he chose Guiliani because he felt it would play up his strengths.

Edit: 16000, bitches.

You agree that McCain could make a huge blunder and loose? That Rice is a distinct possibility as a young popular person? Those are the things I was referring to.

I guess I could be more out of touch with the average voter than I thought though.

While in the primary McCain has to court the Conservative vote, in this general election they will come out in droves just to vote against Hillary if she is the front runner. If Obama is the front runner, I am not as sure what the far right voters will do, Obama is likable enough for some of them to stay home.
McCain may need have some problems against him.
