Buddy of mine who is a dentist in the military just called and said they moved up his Tour of Duty from 6 months to 9 months. They are also shipping him to Afganistan instead of the Med Sea. Apparently the military is beefing up the Osama hunt by 3000 troops or so.

So when will Bush annouce that we finally got Osama? October? Or is that too late for a last minute election push for the republicans? The Stock market would get a 10% overnight gain and he will claim the economy is back on track.

Just wondering...

I would assume this didn't have as much to do with tracking Osama down as it did trying to quell the Taliban.

I thought that (according to a Joph post I read anyway) we agreed to send more troops to Afghanistan because the UN was asking for us to?

Good as Gospel, baby.

Bush isn't going to spring an October surprise for McCain. After the drubbing Bush has gotten from all the Republican candidates, I think he's gonna say "Fuck all y'all" and leave the Oval Office top desk drawer full of urine.

Yeah. Your probably right. Just thought he may want something in the "Positive things Bush did in 8 years column"... You know, something to offset massive govt spending, the deficit, the recession, and the war.

Hey, I voted for the SOB twice...

I really wish us Europeans would do the same. It's totally disgraceful how most European countries, especially France and Germany, are being total pussies on this one. And the worst is that the second Afghanistan fails, and falls into the hands of the Talibans/Pakistan, we're all gonna be whining about it.

And we'll probably blame the US, too.

I'm far from a warmonger, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring some sort of stability to Afghanistan. And we're fUcking it up, purely because its politically convenient to paint this conflict as another of Bush's wars, unworthy of Euro-casualties.

Disgusting.

I know Canada is discussing pulling out. The government is fighting hard to maintain our current status, but is getting whooped by the opposition. The US sending more troops may help our government win the argument to keep us around for longer.

Every election cycle the conspiracy theorists come out in droves predicting Bush will amazingly do something that, if you think about it, is ridiculous: Suddenly take bin Laden off ice and produce him to a) insure a Republican victory, b) rev up the populace to take their attention off either the economy, scandal, deficit, or Jenna's boobs, or c) to ensure his legacy is glorious.

Seriously, don't you think that every person in the military from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff down to the lowliest private would have personally brought OBL to the States in leg irons by now if it had been in their ability? These guys aren't just sitting around waiting for that executive order telling them to go into the back storeroom and go get Osama, where he's been hanging out eating the Skittles and pork patties out of the leftover MREs.

Freaking ponderous.

If any of you wackos ever bothered to watch the news you'd realize that Al Qaeda is moving their operations to Pakistan, where, if they were successful, wonderful devices called nukes are stored. Makes sense then to focus on placing troops where they are likely to be needed, right?

Now that I reflect on it, it was NATO who asked for more US troops, not the UN. To which Gates ruffled feathers when he suggested that maybe the rest of NATO could try pitching in a bit more.

You most likely had it correct the first time. I was trying to remember, and the UN was the first entity that came to mind. My mistake.

I think Bush should replace all the keys on every keyboard in the White House with 'w'.

Well, they could. And should.

It's not like there are many more important wars going on right now that Euro countries are involved in. We're letting Darfur sort itself out, we don't care about Congo, the Balkans are pretty quiet...

The only place where we might intervene is... Chad! And that's only france, and only because its an ex-colony, and only because we have national interests there. Funnily enough, my phd proposal was about France's unilateral military interventions in its African ex-colonies from the 1960's to 2001. Guess I can extend it to 2008 now.
