Edwards drops out of Presidential race

Quote:
CNN) -- Former Sen. John Edwards is dropping out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, CNN has learned.

Edwards has told top advisers about his decision. It is expected he will announce it at a speech in New Orleans, Louisiana, at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Edwards had amassed 26 delegates in the race for the Democratic nomination.

New Orleans is the same city in which Edwards declared his run to be the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee.

Edwards' campaign Web site said he was to deliver an address on poverty and work on a Habitat for Humanity project in New Orleans on Wednesday.

Edwards has trailed former first lady Hillary Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in the early primaries, including a third-place finish in Tuesday's Florida primary, with 14 percent of the votes. He also came in third in key races in New Hampshire and South Carolina.

An Edwards aide said that he does not plan to endorse either Clinton or Obama, at this time, but he may do so in the future.

Edwards had campaigned on the message that he was standing up for the little guy, the people who are not traditionally given a voice in Washington, and that he would do more to fight special interests.

Commenting on his New Orleans trip on Tuesday, Edwards said the city symbolized why he chose to run for president.

"It's a living, breathing example of the heart of my message, what I'm talking about," Edwards said. "I mean it's the failure of government to be there when people need it. It's a perfect indication of the conditions of poverty that exist in America."

In a reaction to President Bush's State of the Union address Monday, Edwards said, "The truth is that Washington is out of touch with what's happening across the country. Between now and January of 2009, Democrats must stand up to this president, stand up for what's right, so he does not continue to forget about the middle class in this country."

One Edwards aide said he is not dropping out of the race due to his wife's health. Elizabeth Edwards announced last year that her breast cancer had returned.

Edwards was John Kerry's running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket in 2004.

I wonder if he'll endorse Obama before Super Tuesday?

Well, there won't be much point in doing so after Tuesday. But he may not endorse anyone at all.

Although he wasn't my candidate of choice, I respected his campaign and obvious passion. Hopefully he has a place in Democratic politics for time to come.

He seemed to have a special loathing for Hillary, so it would suprise me if he didn't endorse Obama just for that reason if nothing else.

As for the cuteness factor, I couldn't say myself. One of my co-workers did seem a little damp in the pants over the prospect of an Obama/Edwards ticket, and made a comment to the effect that it would be the most attractive ticket she'd ever seen.

The guy is as dumb as a f'ucking brick.

Anyone else remember cringing in sheer ******* terror as he got absolutely vivisected during his VP debate with Cheney in 2004. It was like watching a child debate against a seasoned pro. I really wanted to turn it off cause I felt bad for the guy but at the same time I couldn't it was like driving by an accident.

Quite the opposite, actually. Which part of the debate do you think Cheney won?

DSD would have!

Plus he'd get a lot of crossover votes. Thank you, thank you, try the veal.

This one?
Hm. I must have watched something else.

Regarding today's announcement, I read Edwards' resignation speech, and it damn near made me cry. He's not a great speaker, but the man clearly feels it, and I hope sincerely that there's a place for him in the new administration.

But I want to say this -- I want to say this because it's important. With all of the injustice that we've seen, I can say this, America's hour of transformation is upon us. It may be hard to believe when we have bullets flying in Baghdad and it may be hard to believe when it costs $58 to fill your car up with gas. It may be hard to believe when your school doesn't have the right books for your kids. It's hard to speak out for change when you feel like your voice is not being heard.

But I do hear it. We hear it. This Democratic Party hears you. We hear you, once again. And we will lift you up with our dream of what's possible.

One America, one America that works for everybody.

One America where struggling towns and factories come back to life because we finally transformed our economy by ending our dependence on oil.

One America where the men who work the late shift and the women who get up at dawn to drive a two-hour commute and the young person who closes the store to save for college. They will be honored for that work.

One America where no child will go to bed hungry because we will finally end the moral shame of 37 million people living in poverty.

One America where every single man, woman and child in this country has health care.

One America with one public school system that works for all of our children.

One America that finally brings this war in Iraq to an end. And brings our service members home with the hero's welcome that they have earned and that they deserve.

Today, I am suspending my campaign for the Democratic nomination for the Presidency.

Maybe I'm just emotional because I'm that woman that gets up at dawn for my 1.5 hour commute. Smiley: frown
