only a couple months left till Age of Conan launches.

have not logged into WoW in a couple months, left EQ2's new expansion after playing with the sarnak. they did do a good job on it, should have been introduced in EQ1 instead of the iksar IMO. but after the new starting area is over.......same ole same ole. endless tedious button smashing spamm fest fighting action and the same ole mostly empty mid level zones full of empty dungons and lonely zones.

i expect i will drop pirates when it launches like a bad habit too. i find it very similar to D&D online. they did what they do very well, but the focus is just to small and the playfield too limiting. still alot of fun though. ill probably stick it out untill i get a 106 gun ship. have a 36 gun ship at the moment.

not really looking foward to another 10 levels in the new WoW expansion. but ill probably get it anyway. totally done with EQ1. Vanguard is just EQ2 lite, lots of refined.....same ole same ole.

warhammer mabe, but pvp focused games just dont do very well. that leaves AoC for the rest of the year.

Linked the song on youtube, but it appears to have been removed. Shame, it's a good one!

well, the party at launch is just about over. only two servers show any decent population, one here, and one in europe. the rest are, well, very Vanguard/EQ2/EQ1/D&D ish. mostly empty.

what they did right IMO.
1. the concept. im so sick of whacking 1 billion orcs one at a time, really, i think i would have enjoyed anything differant. i like boats. i like traveling. i like anything pirate.

2. the quests. they did a great job researching and mixing some factual information into the fantasy. they were well written and enguaging.

3. the graphics. not so much outside of an instance, but inside it was awsome. you could see people being blown off the ships. you could see the differant types of ammo flying through the air. you could see the holes created in the ships, or sails depending on the ammo you used. very nice.

4. sound. from the music to the cannons going off, to the sound of an old man puffing on a pipe or sawing on a piece of wood to the constant buzz of bugs and mosquitos on the islands. outstanding. very very well done.

5. the ships. sooo many differant types with differant assets. the customizing feature worked well too, even if every other pirate had a black sail.

6. the characters. they did an outstanding job mixing a varity of differant styles and tying them all into the setting. from peg legs, to glass eyes, to the staples like eye patches and bug hats. you could be dashing or scrappy. lots of choices.

what they did wrong.

1. grouping. hello. doesnt work. anyone home? didnt they look at all the other SOE titles barely scraping out enough subscribers to pay for the bandwidth? doesnt take a rocketscientest to see, grouping games are like fish on a hot side walk. flopping around grasping for air and soon going to die.

they banked on it to the point that if you didnt start grouping around 10ish, you had to grind out sniping NPC ships for levels so you could get high enough above the missions to complete them solo. did i say grind? yep. and thats what it felt like too. and you had to do it for a couple levels each time you advanced to a new area. at 26, it was taking me longer to get high enough to complete the quests than it was to do the quests once i got there. felt like, grind grind grind for 3 levels, spend half a level to do all the quests in the area, then go grind grind grind again.

grouping is dead. how many companies are going to continue to throw away millions of development dollars chasing something only the smallest portion of gamers are even interested in? doesnt Blizzard adding literly millions of subscribers a year register to them? /boggle

2. pvp. you were either in a guild which was organized and hunted together, ie, ganking loners as they passed through contested waters, or you made the mistake of traversing contested waters.....once......then avoided pvp and the waters that went with them like you avoided the sand giant in oasis of mar when you were 20 in EQ. its ganking time. and the boat with the most cash is the uberist.

3. the instanced islands. traveling the water gets boaring. the one place where they had the chance to add some interesting content, the islands, was wasted on a super small map in the towns with no access to the rest of the island. justlike the space stations in Earth and Beyond.a wasted opertunity to add something more than the one dimension of life on the water. just made the whole game feel real small.

had some fun. saw some cool stuff. and kid of sad to watch a really cool concept get wasted on developer shortsightedness, knowing the concept will probably be abandoned for a very long time becuase of this games poor performance. just like the fighting action in D&D online. you get something really cool, and really fun, but because its attached to such a small shortsighted product....you get more button smashing tedious gaming action with the next game just because it was attached to something that did a little better as a whole.

hello. McFly. grouping is dead. just like Vanguard.
