Making the best of IEFollow

Through an unfortunate turn of events at work, I can't use Firefox on my office computer any longer. Tomorrow morning I figure I may as well upgrade my version of IE from 6.whatever to v7. I believe that IE7 offers tabbed browsing? My other great loss is AdBlock -- not just blocking ads but blocking unwanted images such as borderline avatars, WoW/FFXI sigs, etc. Are there any applications which can do this for me in IE? The IE site from Microsoft has a link for "AddOns" but, WTF, they think I should have to pay to get the same functionality I get for free with Firefox (the adblocker was $29.95 for Christ's sake) Smiley: rolleyes

I know there's those who say that Firefox is overrated and IE is just as good so does anyone have any sage advice or experience?

I'm curious what the unfortunate events were.

Nothing scandalous, I'm afraid. Which is why I skipped it.

We had a new anti-virus (McAfee) installed on the server and, in the course of installing at our desk computers, I returned to find my Firefox gone. I had previous spoken to our other IT guy (outsourced folk, not company men) a week ago and he just shrugged when he saw me using FF so I just reinstalled it. Then they came around again to update us to Office 2007 and the guy saw FF back and said that he had to kill it because McAfee wouldn't work right with it.

Now, McAfee was working fine with it today, and I think the guy was just an idiot, but my plausible deniability is gone and I won't have much of an excuse if they find it on there again. So I'm forced over to IE and trying to make the best of it.

Not worried enough for that or to spend money on a Flash drive (yes, I know they're cheap. I'm cheaper).

then put a remote desktop control program on your home and work computer and run firefox on your home PC with aforementioned IE skin process.

That could work, but it has no noscript type addon and the ad blocker isn't as powerful.

Yeah, I'd think that remote access would be more of an issue than FireFox...

I could except that I like avatars and premium user images. I just don't like the dumb sig banners and like the option of blocking obnoxious or potentially obscene avatars.

Use the avantbrowser frontend for Internet explorer. It's faster than stock IE, way faster than firefox, doesn't disable or alter IE in any way, and has most of the features of firefox

Uh huh.

Faster and yet makes no changes. Magic?

That's usually around the point that I say "Don't you ever fucking lie to me again. Do you understand?" Seems pretty effective on most tech support monkies.

IE7 is a sack of ***.

Why on earth would Microsoft move around the Home/Refresh/Etc icons and then make then unmovable back to their traditional locations? They're no better situated now and just annoying for those used to the standard.

Have you used Word 2007 yet? They "reorganized" all of the menus into unintuitive, obscure places, and basically made the entire program unusable to anybody who was even remotely familiar with the older versions.

If it ain't broke, don't ******* fix it!

No, replacement frontend that calls all the IE DLL files and secrity structure, and doesn't load a ******** of IE7 graphical interface bloat. It instead loads its own "magically faster" front end which looks better, has more functionality (built in RSS reader options, etc) than IE7, etc.

The IE7 frontend remains on the machine, and can still be used as it is not disabled or altered.

Try it first, then knock it.

I'm not knocking anything. Your comment that changing the entire rendering engine doesn't "alter" anything was just funny.
