Divisional Playoffs Weekend!Follow

#1 Jan 12 2008 at 8:07 AM Rating: Good
Whatcha think about the following games?

    Saturday's

    Game 1: Seahawks @ Packers

I'm pretty divided on this one. No one knows Brett Farve like Mike Holmgren. Neither team has much of a running game, but both teams can break games wide open if they're running backs decide to play. Both teams have good defence, both teams have excellent QB's and stellar WR.

Despite the fact the Hasselbeck and Hackett carried me to the playoffs in two Fantasy leagues, I'm taking the Packers at home in a close one by 3.

    Game 2: Jaguars @ Patriots

While I doubt this will be quite as close as the Ravens/Patriots game earlier this season, I'm expecting it to be similar to the Patriots game against the Eagles. It will have the same outcome, however, as the Patriots win 28-38.

    Sunday's

    Game 1: Giants at Cowboys

The Cowboys have a great passing game and a good defence. The Giants have a great running game, and lately, a great defence as well as a good passing game.

This game really comes down to Romo vs Eli. Recent games have had Eli playing more like Romo, while Romo's been playing more like Eli. If this changes, I'll take the Cowboys, otherwise the Giants in a close one.

    Game 2: Chargers at Colts

The Colts' D is better than they were last year, and last year they won it all. Their offence hasn't been as good, but they went all season with Harrison on the bench. Harrison's back now and with Gates missing practice all week, San Diego's missing their best receiver (even if he plays TE). Now, Chris Chambers showed what he adds to their team last week, so I wouldn't count them out completely, but I can't imagine San Diego winning this one. Peyton doesn't throw 6 INTs very often, & I doubt he'll do it again in the playoffs. Colts 35-24.

Your thoughts? And feel free to elaborate, as this is a Saturday and there isn't much talking going on in these boards today...

Oh fine.

GB 31 Sea 28

Toughest game of the weekend to pick. Packers are the better team, talent-wise, but Seattle has experience and Mike Holmgren on their side. In the end, I pick Green Bay because of the home-field and their superior running game.

NE 38 Jax 14

Maybe Jacksonville can stop the Pats' from running the ball, but now that the records have all been set and the focus can go solely back to winning games, nobody is going to stop Brady and Co. The Pats, on the other hand, will take away the Jags run game, and Gerard can't score with New England. I can't believe so many people think Jacksonville has a shot in this one; did no one watch the Pittsburgh game where they barely got by a Steelers team that lacked Willy Parker? Also, Bellichek has had two weeks to gameplan for this one. That is all.

DAL 17 NYG 21

I really like how the Giants are playing right now. Conversely, the Cowboys have looked pretty ****** in their last couple of contests. I like the Giants pass rush and running game, and hell, even Eli has looked great the past two weeks. The Giants are my super bowl pick out of the NFC right now.

IND 41 SD 21

In my opinion, this is the surest thing this weekend. Based largely on their last meeting, where Manning threw the 6 picks and San Diego had two special teams touchdowns in the first quarter, and Indy still only lost because Vinatieri missed a thirty-yarder. That won't happen again. None of those things will happen again.

I can't wait to watch the Indy-New England game next week.

Packers

The Seahawks are notorious for blowing it in the playoffs, and they've been too inconsistant this year. The Packers are the feel-good story much like the Steelers when they won it with Bettis. Farve will at least take them to the next round.

Pats

The Jaguars will put up a hell of a fight, and I honestly hope they win. Mostly because a couple of my friends are Pats fans and I'm sick of hearing about them. Sweet sweet justice if they follow up their undefeated season with a loss in the playoffs and don't even make it to the Superbowl. But likely wishful thinking on my part.

Giants

If Eli keeps it together, they'll win. The Cowboys have been slipping, and with TO not likely at 100%, I just don't think they'll do it. Also, I hate TO. So the Giants it is.

Colts

I really wouldn't mind seeing the Chargers pull it off, I'd like to see them in the big show. But they're not strong enough to win the AFC, and Norv Turner is a lousy coach. Indy has had a great year, and look good to go all the way to the divisional championship. They're the one team besides the Jags that have a good shot at beating the Pats.

Though it pains me to agree, mostly because I can't stand Boston sports fans this decade, I am forced to.

im not surprised that the seahawks got spanked. i thought they were a fraud. had an easy schedule, almost blew it at home against the skins. they didnt even score a legit touchdown considering they had such good field position on the first 2 drives.

colts getting owned at home was surprising. i guess last year was the exception and not the rule

At the risk of saying "I told you so!"... Um... I told you so.

I'm not sure why you'd think this was "the exception". San Diego beat Indy last year in the regular season. Had they not choked against New England and given the game away, they'd likely have been the Superbowl Champs instead of Indy. San Diego beat Indy this year in the regular season as well.

And let's not kid ourselves. Omega actually got the score numbers right (just reversed). We all know that the real final score in that game was SD 35, Indy 24...

And since this is likely to be the last week I'll get to crow about SD, it's got to really suck to realize that the SD offense can drive down the field and score a touchdown with their star running back out, their star TE seriously hurt, and playing their backup quarterback. Seriously. SD has depth. They may not always realize it, but they do. As I said last week, they actually play better when they cant count on running to LT and throwing to Gates as their first choice every single down. Their biggest problem is that those two players are so good that they end up being a crutch.

It'll be interesting to see the matchup next week. The realist in me says that NE's likely to win, but I honestly do believe that the Chargers defense has by far the best chance of seriously slowing Brady down. I've been watching a number of NE games and he's good at forcing passes up the middle and doing it so quickly that the defense can't react to it. I have a feeling that San Diego wont be that half step behind, especially with the way they've been playing pass defense in the last half season. Certainly, SD has a better chance then Indy did (again IMO). Against a team that has a poor running game, SD's pass rush is ridiculously strong. Just watching the NE game this last week, the thought going through my head on almost every down was "SD would have sacked Brady by now".

Should be fun either way!

I don't want to say San Diego got lucky, but the two times the Colts got the ball back before the end of the game they ended up going 4 and out because of dropped passes.

Yes, San Diego played very good D during those two drives, by Clark was wide open on that last play and the ball bounced right off his hands.

That being said, Michael Turner could be a starting RB on about half the other teams in the NFL. He's a beast.

As for the Giants @ Cowboys: Tony Romo can't win a playoff game. Just don't blame his vacationing prior to the game, or TO will cry.

They did get lucky.

They also got anally raped by the refs. They played a great game and it was one of the more fun to watch Playoff games not involving God's Team that I've seen in a long time. I forget who it was that made the hit, but late in the game, one of the SD defensive backs just killed an Indy receiver and I literally jumped up and shouted "Ohh!!! Who needs a pep talk now, *****!" That usually only happens when I'm watching primary vote total coverage.

I'm betting that was Marlon McCree on Reggie Wayne.

Honestly, though, the pep talk commercial where Peyton ends with the "You might just want to buy some bigger shirts" line is easily my favorite commercial featuring a Manning.

Usually, a team that's forced to go 4 and out a couple possessions in a row in the fourth quarter does so because the defense stopped them. I'd suggest that maybe the fact that SD has evolved into a brutally effective pass defense over the last 8 games has something to do with that. Just a suggestion though...

No. He really wasn't. It was so close that the commentators originally thought that the defender had tipped the ball. He didn't, but if the ball had come in an inch lower he would have. In fact that ball was thrown absolutely as best it could have been to prevent the defender from blocking it and give the receiver a chance to catch it. And it was still an couple inches too high for him to get to.

There's a secret to this. San Diego has tall players. On offense *and* defense. And they can jump really high. It makes that sort of "over the top" pass virtually impossible to complete against them.

Quote:

Yes he is. And Sproles aint bad either. If only the other teams couldn't count on every single running play with LT in the play going to LT (or the occasional "fake out" to the fullback). Wouldn't it be amazing if say every third run play they put LT in the backfield and then pitch it to sproles or Turner instead? Or (heaven forbid) do a reverse LT->Sproles. They have the potential of using LT the same way they've used Gates for the last couple games. Count on everyone watching him while the design of the play goes somewhere else.

Those are options that San Diego has only recently even started playing with. With LT having a gimpy knee (and I really wonder how much of his and River's gimpyness is being falsely played up btw), we might just see a lot more options in the offense next week. IMO, that's all advantage Chargers. Whether that's enough to make a difference against NE will remain to be seen. That whole team is a "beast" right now...

I agree, it's funny.

I don't have the same level of hatred for manning as I do for say, Derek Jeeter, but they both share that same sort of whiney ***** "why me" facial expression much of the time.
