I don't like Mitt RomneyFollow

It's true.

I had intended to make a post saying at least one thing I liked about each of the major Republican candidates in an attempt to reach across the aisle and tickle some Pubbies tummies and see some smiles.

McCain - I like a bit about him. Immigration, environmental, torture, I can even respect his current support for the surge because he has been one of the few outspoken Republican war critics in the past.

Giuliani - I like his more socially moderate stances on abortion and gay rights. I know he has been quietly pushing them under the bed to appeal to the Right but I'd hope that the light still burns under the bushel.

Huckabee - I appreciate that he sees education as more than math & science. I like that he advocates "getting tough" with Musharraf. He mentions that Guantanamo isn't worth the blight it represents to the rest of the world.

I'm lost on Romney. Every one of his issues statements on his site make me think "ugh". I wouldn't pick any of the above as my first choice but if it was between Huckabee and Romney I could at least say "I only hate 92% of Huckabee's stances".

So I don't know. Maybe Romney should be your perfect GOP candidate.

What does that even mean? Curtailing his book signing tours in the US?

Go look into it if you care.

I'm not voting for the guy so I'm not up to Googling for you. Maybe you can start an argument with gbaji over it. Smiley: laugh

I was actually more interested in why you'd like it, really. That didn't lend itself to a pithy banter, though.

I think that would be pretty universally agreed to. Problem is there really isn't much at all we can do about it.

Perhaps. But I'm receptive to ideas to the contrary. Which was why I liked Obama's statement over the summer while everyone else was gasping that anyone would dare anything but the kid glove treatment.

I'm sure you could go on at length about it and how its impossible to do anything else, etc. I'm still open to hearing alternate ideas.

Just go ahead and assume I said something belittling about wanting to hear solutions that won't work instead of the truth. I'm lazy.

He isn't that bad. He really did try to clean up Mass. but was cockblocked by the high-spending, patronage job offering democratic state Congress. He came into Mass and cut spending and didn't raise taxes. He tried to merge the two state highways commissions into one to save millions of $$$ but was once again cockblocked by the Democratic government.

I am from Mass and I am a Republican ( a very liberal one). I have had the chance to meet him on a few occassions. He seemed interested in what people's concerns were. Is he the best candidate...I am not sure. If I had to vote today, I would be leaning towards McCain although I hated the bill he sponsered about Crimaliens.

Do you live in Mass? OK then.

Romney tried to merge the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and MassHighway (cited here). Both do the same exact thing, maintain Massachusetts roads. If, according to the studies, both were merged together, it would have saved the Commonwealth a great deal of money. Some members of the Democratic State Congress were against it and it failed. I find it funny that the new Democratic governer has suggested the same exact plan and it has been met with open arms (cited here).

Listen Smash, I have a better chance at seeing Christ than changing your mind. I was just saying that I do not think he is the worst candidate out there, Republican or Democrat. Romney did clean up the Utah Olympics. He brought it out of the red and make it successful.

So you're saying that he's incapable of dealing with a Democratic controlled Congress? Smiley: wink2

I'm just kidding. Even assuming those things are as presented, that still doesn't give me any issues of his which I'm "happy" about unless he has a big plan to merge some federal agencies which I'm unaware of.

Yes. I do.

I knew more about inside politics in Boston when I was 9 that you ever will.

Kevin White played cards at my house three nights a week when I was growing up. Ray Flynn taught me how to drive. So, no, the fact that you live in the state and listen to the Howie Carr show twice a week does not, in fact, mean you know more about Massachusetts politics that I do.

Sorry.

Exactly. You have no idea what that fight was about. That's the point.

He's not the worst candidate, he's just an empty suit. That certainly has it's merits. He's not unpredictable. If you're looking for someone to further the divide between rich and poor and increase the power of cooperations, he's your guy.

A local Boston talk radio host named Jay Severin

He's not local, he's from New York. He's probably been to Boston ten time in his life. See, there are no successful GOP operatives that can survive Boston politics for any length of time, so if a local radio station thinks there's a market, they have to import one and have him lie about where he is.

Fool.

I seriously doubt Ray Flynn taught you how to drive. Does Mumbles Menino do your laundry? And, no, listening to Howie Carr doesn't make me an expert. Nor have I ever claimed to know more about Mass politics than you do. Since we are on the subject though, what makes YOU the expert...listening to Thomas Finneran?

My original statement was to Jophiel. I was trying to state than Mitt Romney has tried but, was unsuccessful in turning around this state for the better.

You wouldn't understand it. It's too subtle. If you were the sort of person who cared about what was behind broad stroke news reporting of issues you'd have found out already. It's not my job to try and convert you. I'm not particularly inclined to get into an argument with you about local political issues you don't understand. There's no upside.

Yeah, that may be, I have no idea. I don't really keep up to speed on Jimmy's career at this point, be it his horrendous attempts at political consulting, his imaginary degrees, his broadcasting from a studio 500 miles from where he claims to be or whatever. The guy's a lightweight even in the "conservative pundit community. Also having been at events where he was present, I get the impression that he's little gay midget. Which is all well and good, but slightly against type of his radio persona.

Actually, yes I do. I am a member of the Massachusetts Republican Committee and have had a leadership role in my local town's branch. Through these committees, I have helped my local state senator get elected. We actually had a friendly dinner together before Christmas. He provided me with information to help fight the MBTA's fare increase. Oh, and he also plays on my summer softball team. Good enough?

Yes, I have that too but only on the local town level. I belong to many local committees including the Veterns committee. My younger brother is actually a town councilor for the town in which I live. I won't tell you which town but, I will tell you one of the major issues in this town is the reuse of the airbase. If you are as informed as you claim to be, you should know what town I am talking about. BTW, my brother is a Democrat and I am a Republican. We often debate each other on different issues. One such issue was the assessment of home owner properties for local taxes. They just raised taxes even though home prices have declined.

I considered running for councilor at large this year but decided against it for family issues. Besides, I was told it would be a conflict of interest if two brothers were on the council. I am currently on the local ballot as a voting registar though.

I dislike the fact that the local Pubbies seem to think he "cut spending" when in fact it was the increase in capital gains taxes (from the previous administration) that accounted for almost half of our defecit's elimination.

Then when you take a look at what he did cut, you realize he made huge cuts in state aid to towns and cities and cut state funding for higher education (leading state run colleges to increase tuition by 63%).

Honestly, the only two things I like that he either did or tried to do were signing the Mass. Health Reform Law (even if his reasons for doing so had more to do with $ than with making sure everyone was covered) and trying to get some of our money back from the Big Dig companies after that mother was killed in the tunnel.

In closing, he stinks.
