No.

The Hero was Tensing Norgay.

Hillary was just the rich guy hanging on his coat-tails.

I'm not decrying Hillary's achievement. Big Ups to the man, but Tensing was the hero.

Certainly Tenseng was the technical support for the achievement, but do you think he would have done it without the Hillary's support?

At any rate, anyone who's seen the top of the world with their own eyes has my envy.

rip Sir.

Sir Ed was a top bloke. Anyone who has met him or is aware of his achievments not just in the climbing world but also his work in the Himalays and elsewhere regarding schools and services for the people he loved would agree.

Us kiwis will miss him.

I'll retract my earlier statement. Yes he was amazing, and a Kiwi's Kiwi. Top Bloke.

As a young climber, many years ago, I went to hear him speak. He was (and is) a king of alpinists.

But I then went to hear Tensing speak. I'll never forget his polite, charming tones as he spoke with reverence about Sir Ed, but his bitterness came through.

A sad day whatever.

I never understood that whole "because it's there" deal.

Kudos (I guess) for making it up and back down, but those guys are still insane.

Yeah, because he did. Then he did it alone like 15 times.

The photo in that article looks really odd and anachronistic. How many full-color photos do you see from 1953, especially ones that aren't faded?

Hmm, upon wiki-ing, this one is from 1915. Crazy!
