Costco is selling Mexican Coca-Cola which is made with real cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Supposedly it tastes much better. I can't wait to try it.

Probably not.

In fact, almost definitely not. Your perception of how it tastes, though, are really more important.

It does taste different. The cane sugar formula has a different quality of sweetness to it. Have you not been able to tell the difference between sugar or corn syrup sweetened food and stuff with nutri-sweet or saccharine? It's clearly different. The difference between cane sugar and corn syrup is not as distinct, but it's noticeable.

Of course they also sell it in the old style glass bottles, and most people agree that the container you drink from can affect the way it tastes to you. Aluminum can vs glass bottle taste a bit different from each other, and from a plastic tumbler different still.

Not all Costcos sell the Mexican Coke. I have seen it at some but not others. I guess they get their stuff from different distributors.

If you really want to try something like that. Find yourself some Dublin Dr.Pepper. It's made in Dublin, Texas with real sugarcane sugar. Addicting stuff.

Erm, what's what "taste" is Smiley: laugh

The Coca-Cola in Italy tasted much better (to me) than the stuff in the US. And they still use cane sugar as well.

All the sodas south of the border are still made with cane sugar, taste yummier, and have less food coloring than the ones here. I'm always freaked out by how neon they make the drinkables here.

My estimation of what makes a good Coke is whether or not is has a lot of burn to it. It should sting your mouth a bit. Too syrupy or sweet and it's no good--this is why fountain Coke is usually better than bottled or canned Coke. So if the cane sugar Coke tends to be less sweet than the corn syrup version, that's definitely a plus. (Aside from the fact that there's all sorts of other issues about corn syrup that we won't get into, especially since it's pretty much unavoidable in packaged food these days, if you really wanted to get crunchy about it.)

This is true also. Since I'm not willing to pay the outrageous prices they charge for the little miniature novelty bottles of Coke you sometimes find, I haven't had Coke in a glass bottle since I was a kid.

Ends up, I get to try this stuff tonight. One of Mr. Ambrya's co-workers, knowing we're Coke connoisseurs around here, brought a bottle in for him to bring home. It's chilling in the fridge as we speak.

While I'm sure this stuff is ambrosia to Dr. Pepper drinkers, alas, for me, Dr. Pepper ranks up there right beside Bud Light on the list of "Beverages I'm dying to drink right after I have a tall glass of chilled rat ****."

But so far, everyone I know who has ever tried a cane sugar variant of their favorite soda (including you Dr. Pepper heathens) has preferred it, so this Coke has promise.

No Costcos around here. But that stuff sounds good. I like Coke for the same reasons - not as sweet as Pepsi, and it needs to burn and come out your nose a bit, haha.

Someone send me a case.

Still, whatever may be said about the formula, Coke's taste has certainly altered over the years. The most radical (and to serious Coke aficionados, most upsetting) change came in 1980, when Coke, in an effort to control costs, permitted its bottlers to substitute high-fructose corn sweetener for the beet and cane sugar once used in the product.

The result was that Coke's previously crisp and bracing taste was sadly blunted.

I wish beverage makers in general - whether soda, juice, iced tea, gatorade, etc - would dilute their drinks by about 50%. Everything tastes too syrupy to me these days. You shouldn't have to wash down a beverage with water.

Yeah.

Also: You were in Italy.

I'm sure the coffee was better, too. Red Stripe beer is great when I'm in Jamaica, when I drink it here it tastes like warm ****.

What a crazy cooincidence. I guess the travel on the plane ruined it somehow.

Anyway, if you kids want to buy soda made with magical delicious cane sugar, knock yourselves out. I imagine the real genuine Mexican water makes it taste better too.

Wow, I didn't know Italy was reknowned for it's Coca-cola. There was me hoggin' on the pizza, gelato and coffee.

Oink!

I've had Dr Pepper made with real cane sugar(somehow our Walmart got a palette of it). It was quite delicious(preferable to the regular stuff).

I hope they start putting out more of it.

It's always good to trust your own perceptions and stay as far away from objectivity as possible. I'm pretty sure Nathan Bedford Forrest said that...

For the record, I've had Coca Cola in many nations, and it always tasted like ***** carbonated sugar water to me. It's a throw away soft drink. It would cost about 9 cents per metric ton more for some other company to make cola with pure cain sugar!!!!! and erode their market share if there were a large difference in taste beyond the placebo novelty of knowing it's made with sucrose instead of fructose.

When referring to something as subjective as taste? Sure.

You claim you can't tell the difference. Fair enough. Given that you express disdain for Coca-Cola in general, I'll just figure that a taste adjustment some people notice isn't enough for you to hate it anyway.

Actually, the difference in taste was what prompted me to read the ingrediants on the can.

I don't doubt you can detect the difference. I doubt that if the situation were reversed, that the pure corn syrup Coke fro Italy wouldn't have tasted better.

That said, I imagine it really did taste much better with Cocaine.

I grew up with the cane sugar versions of many different sodas, Fanta being my favorite. I can't stand soda here.
On occasion I'll have a sip of a fountain soda because it's tolerable, but I can't even finish a kid's size. There is a noticeable difference in taste to those who care to note it.
