Don't worry, that's a common misconception. You absolutely do NOT need to have done your taxes, nor have even received your W-2 yet. If you only had one job last year, it's very easy to estimate using your last paycheck stub (which usually gives year to date information).

If I recall filling out my portion as a parent of a dependent child, they've actually processed the app, but it has been put on 'hold' status until I go in and enter my current tax info.

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It main purpose to apply for federal financial aid, but, most schools will require this before granting any monetary awards.

From the e-mail I just received:
Quote:
Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been processed and the data will be made available to the school(s) listed on your FAFSA. The financial aid office at your school will contact you if additional information is required.

Your Student Aid Report (SAR), which contains a summary of your FAFSA information, is now available for you online. Review your SAR as soon as possible to see if any additional information or corrections may be needed. You must confirm the accuracy of the estimated income information you or your parent reported on your FAFSA after you complete your 2007 tax returns. After comparing the information on your FAFSA with the information on your tax return, you must correct any FAFSA information that is not accurate and you must also update FAFSA questions #32 (#76 for parents) to "already completed" to indicate that your information is now based on completed tax returns.
So my school will have the info and can start working with it but I need to update it as the information is available.

There's no flag on the FAFSA form stating that my tax info is incomplete or estimated so there's no reason for them to put it "On Hold". Obviously it's up to me to correct it as soon as possible though since failing to do so risks having them check my records and whatever action comes after finding them false.

Exactly. Also, many schools have FAFSA deadlines and they use when their office received your information, not when you updated it...so the earlier you do it, the better.

I am now, and have been for the last decade, officially boycotting higher education. The first four universities that kicked me out because I had the audacity to not attend class or complete course work soured me on the whole experience. On the up side, it seems that I didn't need the degree after all.

I quit higher education 20 years ago, and the only impact it's had on me is to make me remove the "Degree" requirement from person specifications when advertising jobs.

Unless it's a vocational requirement (Medic etc.) it means fUck-all
