I'm honestly perplexed by this one, so help me out. Let me state this is one of few traditions left that make me feel Very Foreign. I got many Christmas cards this year, and I've noticed over the years that some people make it a tradition to take a family photo and attach it to the card. Some people skip this, and send only a picture of their kid. To be perfectly honest, it always weirds me out to get the ones with pictures of people's children on it. I'm never sure what to do with them, and I feel guilty throwing them out. They're usually cute kids, so I put them on the fridge for a while but eventually, when I have need of the real estate, I do toss them and feel guilty about it.
I remember we used to trade photos at school and my father couldn't stand the thought that strangers were tossing our pictures in the trash. I used to joke that it had to do with them stealing our souls, but I find I'm the same way as an adult, to the point that now my fridge has no less than ten pictures of other people's children (not including Jr., whom I suppose, technically I didn't birth but that does not count) that I got in Christmas cards and I'm mortified to think that I'll toss them and someday the parent will come over and ask why I didn't hold on to it.

Am I insane? Anyone else have similar thoughts? What's the protocol here, am I supposed to hang on to them?

You have absolutely no obligation to hold on to pictures of other people's kids. None. I absolve you.

It's polite, if you're going to talk to them or write (or email, etc) to mention that you got their lovely card and oh golly don't they grow up fast and so cute, and embellish as much as you're comfortable with.

Look at it this way: if they'd emailed the picture would you keep it in your inbox indefinitely? Cause I don't - I reply, and delete.

Haha, I save the pic in the photos folder. Hrm. I have issues.

BTW, I feel I should mention I outraged Joph since two of the folks that sent me cards with cute kid pics were Nexa and DSD and he feels I'm being rude. My stance is that both ladies know me well enough to know that would not be my intent, and I feel both would be candid in expressing their expectations. Even with that said, a preemptive "I'm sorry, no offense meant" to both you gals.

Personally, tossing them seems fine to me. However, if you want to get them "out of the way" and are really worried about offending someone or being thought of as rude, why not buy a photo album and label it something like "Christmas Card Photos" and store all your pics in there. Not only have you done something meaningful with the pictures, but they are tucked neatly out of the way, and also provide a catalog of time, so to speak, in case you ever find yourself wanting to look back upon all the years.

I'll generally keep them pinned on the fridge for a while, till I get replacements. Then I toss the old ones. I don't really get a whole bunch of them though, just from close friends and family, and most of the family doesn't bother. I get more pictures emailed to me than I get during Christmas, those I typically save to a folder on my hard drive and then delete from my email so's to keep space free. Yeah, ok, so Hotmail gives you freakin' 5gb now, old habits die hard.

I wouldn't feel guilty tossing out a picture on a Christmas card, now that Christmas is over. I'm keeping DSD's though...because it's just not possible to have more photogenic kids. Smiley: cool

I only send out cards so I can look like I'm at least making an effort at being a good mother. Besides, if you order the type of card I sent, you don't even have to write on or sign the damn things...how deliciously lazy is that?!

As for those sent to me, I cut out the heads of your children, glued them to popsicle sticks and told Hannah that they were her new friends and to leave me alone with my brandy.

What creeps me out are the form 'letters' that some people send along with their cards telling us all about the wonderful deeds of their children.

I was tempted to send one out this year bragging about my sons first arrest and sharing the story of my daughter losing her virginity.

The card pictures get thrown into my box full of wrapping materials when I pack up x-mas stuff for the year. I save them because I feel guilty throwing them away. Smiley: frown

Oh, lord, don't get me started about the newsletter. When I was a kid we used to get a pamphlet every year from the same crazy lady, and she pretty much did what you were tempted to do. Not just her kids, though; her whole circle. All the dirt came out.

Man, I was so glad we weren't closely related to her or any closer to her geographically, or I know for a fact we'd have been fodder for her damn "newsletter".

The year she got divorced my mom wouldn't even let us see it. She read parts of it to us. I can't even imagine what she had to say about her ex - to everyone they both knew, both families, people he probably didn't know at all. She was psycho.

I kind of like the form letters. Though, my relatives don't advertise the "dirt" in them, they just talk about what everyone did that year. Usually cool vacations, neat accomplishments, that sort of thing.

However, this year my step-sister sent me her usual letter in the form of a crossword puzzle. She's a grade school teacher, and I guess she thought it would be cute. For example, 7 down was something like "The State we went to for (her husband's) parents 40th anniversary". I called her and thanked her for the cute picture of the kids, and asked her why she sent me homework. She got kinda pissed.

I have a friend that used to send them out every year, talking about all sorts of neat trips and things she did. This past year she had a baby, and in her own words, was not 'prepared'. No newsletter. Smiley: lol This girl went to Georgetown and Yale, speaks 5 languages, is the head of an NPO at 32, and finally seems human.

Nope. That picture took 40 minutes of Ashe crawling away trying to eat the photographers camera, and about 75 shots to get that one shot.

Toss em, Flea. I expect every single person I sent them to to toss them. They're not to make people feel guilty about it, the kid photos are more for showing your friends and fam who live far away (HINT HINT) how damn big your kids got since they dont get to see them often or at all. Plus, a lot of the times, they're cheaper to print out than regular cards.

I planned to only be in Chicago for a couple of years, but it's taking longer than that for Joph to finish his undergrad, so we're pretty much stuck until that happens. I don't want to deal with out-of-state tuition until I have to....
