My nephew, more than anything else, wants army men for Christmas. He's big into soldiers (ironic, given my sister's "no toy guns" policy) and is envious of the set Joph Jr has and wants some of his own. My kid has some set with the little molded plastic mountainside and barbed wire and trees, etc. Still cheap plastic army men but the deluxe package. So I figured "Easy deal".

Ha.

Target: No, WalMart: No, Toys R Us: No, KB Toys: No, KMart: No, Super-KMart: No, Big Lots (I was stretching): No.

So I got him a tank from Target. It's pretty cool, about 16" long, nifty details, looks built to last but still a toy and not a "model". This morning my mother calls me to ask if I found the army men. Nope. She says that he really wants them. Finally I found a bag o' army men at the Walgreens. About $3.00 for 55 "pieces" and my kid can say they're from him instead of from all of us and we'll give them to my nephew with the tank. But, yeesh. I was in a GameStop the other day that still had fucking Wii's for sale but I can't find a god damn army man playset.

So any gift-buying failures you guys are going to have to suck up this season?

I probably could have bought the army men online but did't think I'd need to until it was too late

I have hunted high and low for 6 months SIX FIGGING MONTHS! for a playing mat with a streetmap design for Little Tarv to play on with his toy cars, not the cheap *** fall apart in 3 hours plastic back crap, but a Carpet type Mat.

I have seen 3 in shops and was told "those are for display purposes only"

Army men I've seen but no set pieces!

So, Walgreens, you say? I'm, um...getting them for my son. Yes, I know he's -6 weeks.

I can't believe your Toys R Us didn't have them. The one here had 2 aisles of army toys, including the army men sets. Should have told me, I could have picked up some for you.

Fortunately I haven't had any failures (in the gift purchasing department) this year, on the kid or wife front.

No problems finding gifts for grandkids and the adults get coffee and biscotti from Little Italy.

Military related Museum Stores around here, seem to always have neat sets of army men. Need to ask Jonwin where to get them now.

I almost had an incident at the bookstore, to which I arrived 15 minutes before they closed. They kept overheading their closing time every 5 minutes, which gave me quite the adrenaline rush. I grabbed Joph's gift and ran like Hades.
