New York Islanders forward Chris Simon again leads the NHL for the longest suspension for an on-ice incident after being punished 30 games Wednesday for stepping on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu...

Link!

I cannot believe he got a 30 game suspension for this. Sure, Simon is a prick but still, what's next? Suspensions for bad language??

Ludicrous. If this is the standard, Ulf Samuelson must be hunted down and castrated immediately. By Darcy Tucker, using his helmet.

Go leafs go :)

They'll miss the playoffs again, I'm sure :(

Chris Simon is a thug and a history of intent to injure did and should have played in to his suspension. 30 games for that is a joke. 2 games, extenuated to 5, perhaps, but 30? Ridiculous. I am happy the Islanders put him on leave, even though it is payed.

On suspensions, though, Mathias Ohlund got 5 games for a lumberjack 2-handed slash on Mikko Koivu that broke his leg and has him still out 1 month later. For flagrant, injury causing infractions like that, as well as the Bertuzzi incident of old that left Moore out to this very day I am all for a you don't play until he does approach.

Oilers are suckin' too. That's not stopping me from going to the Oil/Canes game in January. Weeee!

As for Simon, I guess the league is just sick of dealing with him. At least, I hope so. If this league gets any more pussy, I might have to start watching figure skating.

Stepping on someone is something that you just don't do in hockey. The same goes with kicking and jumping on a person's back and driving their face into the ice.

To put this into perspective, these guys have their skates sharpened between periods. They aren't like the skates you have hanging in your closet, they're razor sharp and can easily cut someone. That could've easily ended Jarkko's career and he's extremely lucky that there wasn't any damage done. It's really classified as an attack with a weapon.

Combine that with Simon's history of lowering the bar (kicking, two handed slashes, vicious attacks) and you get 30 days. A lot of people think that he should've been banned for life.

I'm all for fighting, hitting and all the good stuff that's in the NHL but going out of your way to hurt someone on purpose it way too far.

And yes, go Oilers go.

30 games is only because it was Chris Simon. Anyone else likely would've only gotten a few games. But Chris Simon is a habitual rule breaker and thug. Personally, I think they should just ban him from hockey altogether. This is his what, 8th suspension?

Simon has been involved in numerous on-ice incidents and has been suspended eight times for his conduct.

In 1997, during a game against the Edmonton Oilers, Simon allegedly addressed forward Mike Grier as a "@#%^" to Grier's face in response to comments about his Native heritage. Although the spoken words were never confirmed, he was suspended three games as a result of the incident.
Simon was suspended for one game in a 2000 playoff series against Pittsburgh for cross checking Peter Popovic across the throat. He was given two-game suspensions once in April 2001 for elbowing Anders Eriksson, and twice in 2004 for cross checking Tampa Bay's Ruslan Fedotenko and then jumping on and punching him, and for kneeing Dallas's Sergei Zubov...

This is not inclusing his last suspension for 25 games and this one for 30.

I was an Avs fan. When I first started watching Hockey, my little brother was in Boulder, and we went to a couple games out there. I was hooked. Then we got the Wild, and I have been a member of the Team of 18000 ever since.

6 and a half years of consecutive sell outs, 18568 per game unless its the playoffs, then the number gets weird. If you haven't read the article Sports Illustrated, check this out.

I've seen games in other cities, hockey cities, and never felt the energy from fans I feel at the X. The waiting list for season tickets is 7500 long. To get on the list you have to pay $200 a seat, then $100 a seat every year to stay on the list. At this point, when my number comes up I will be almost half payed for my first season.

Any Canadian cities?

Montreal is a pretty amazing place to watch a hockey game.

Greatest game I've ever seen live was the gold medal game between Canada vs. Russia in World Juniors in Halifax. No one in the crowd sat down for more than 5 minutes total the entire game. Only pro hockey game I've seen live was Calgary vs. Minnesota in Calgary. Was a surprisingly quiet game given the way Kipur performed.

Edmonton is amazing too. Such a hockey town. Too bad the fans aren't rewarded more often. Smiley: frown

Montreal is a pretty crazy place for hockey. I was there a few weeks ago when they lost 3-0 against Buffalo. Even in defeat the crowd was insane but it was nothing compare to Quebec city and the Nordiques. 5 years finishing last and still a 94.6% average attendance.

Calgary. Once. That cage they call an arena doesn't make the top 5 as far as spaces I have seen for hockey (views, overall experience, etc.), but the fans are ok.

I know hockey is bigger, as a rule, in Canada. National sport, and all, I get it. But in the U.S., you can't get any more Canadian than Minnesota. This is the land of 10,000 lakes, for Bob's sake. In the winter, 9,000 of them have rinks on them. (right next to the ice fishing villages). During 1st intermission at Wild games, they have mites come out and play a 3 minute scrimmage at one end of the ice. Nothing but 20 kids moving in an amoeba from one side to the other, but its the highlight of those kids' lives. They pick one to interview on the Jumbotron at the end. Its awesome.

Hell, we even have our own Anthem.Smiley: glasses

The greatest game I've ever been to was Edmonton vs. San Jose, game 3 of the second round 2006 playoffs. It went to triple overtime when suddenly, Horcoff scored the winner right in front of me. It's an experience I'll never forget.

During that playoff run the arena was so loud that it would damage your hearing.

If you ever get a chance to see an Oilers playoff game I'd highly recommend it. Of course, we have to make the playoffs first.

I was watching that game and I saw when it happened in real time. I'm a huge Penguins fan and I'm a huge fan of all hockey teams in general. I think that the length of the suspension is warranted.

Chris Simon has been suspended in his career seven times. Seriously, seven times. You can only argue that it was the heat of the fight for so long. Simon has shown he has absolutely no issue with attempting to injure a fellow player, and more often than not he will take that opportunity to do something.

All game Ruutu and Simon were in each other's faces. Both are instigators, both are fighters. You don't see Ruutu slewfooting Simon and then stepping on the back of his leg.

If Ruutu's skate was an inch or two lower his career might very well be over. And let's face it, if Simon swings a little bit lower during his two handed lumberjack swing on Ryan Hollweg, he hits him in the throat. He very possibly could have ended his career as well, possibly his life(collapsed trachea anyone?)

I love hockey because it's fast paced and brutal. But Simon has absolutely no place in the NHL. This guy has shown time and time again that given the opportunity, he will attempt to injure a fellow player.

Fuck Simon. And fuck comparing that to bad language. You should be shaking your own head for thinking this is some tiny little incident instead of yet another idiotic violent attempt to injure someone by Simon.

My point was that THIRTY games is a bit steep for that misconduct. Jesus, Pronger's elbows should each have repeated 30 games suspensions then. Plently of players lash out inappropriately during games. It happens all the time. 30 games for a kick with his skate has more to do with Simon being Simon than anything else. Clearly you're not a Simon fan...fair enough, but then Ruutu is such an angel, now isn't he? Smiley: rolleyes

Oh no. Ruutu's a ***** too. But it's not a kick with a skate. Adam summed it up perfectly. These guys skates are as sharp as a razor, he could have not only ended Ruutu's career, but also affected his quality of life. Nobody wants a bum wheel. I don't think this guy has any business in the NHL. After what he did to Hollweg last year how many chances is the NHL going to give him? I personally would love to see him out of the NHL playing somewhere in Podunk. But that's me Smiley: lol

Well, if he keeps getting suspended, you just might get your wish.

That, or he will fuck someone up and go the way of the Bertuzzi.

Well at least in Bertuzzi's case he was honestly contrite about the situation. He accepted his punishment and when it was up, came back top stink up the league. The difference between those two is you have Chris Simon who is a rent-a-thug and you have Todd Bertuzzi, who was a bonafide star in Vancouver.

Bertuzzi never did anything prior to that to suggest he would go ******* on Moore. And since he's come back he's not had another incident. Simon on the other hand is a ticking timebomb.

It's only a matter of time before he tries to stab somebody with his skate. I can only hope that it's Jagr.

Oh and the best game I ever went to was Lemieux's comeback game against the Maple Leafs the first time he came out of retirement. The place was electric and when he scored it was fucking chaos. Greatest game I've ever seen. The next closest is the last game I took my father to see before he passed away. He wanted to see Sidney Crosby play once. The Kid did not disappoint.
