Producer Thomas Schuehly ("Alexander") has acquired the remake rights to Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" and is partnering with Mario Kassar on an updated version of the 1927 silent sci-fi classic.

The Munich-based Schuehly and Kassar are currently in negotiations with a number of top directors to helm the pic, with a final decision expected in the next few months.

One of the most groundbreaking films in cinematic history, the influence of "Metropolis" is evident in classic works that have spanned the 20th century, from James Whale's "Frankenstein," "Dr. Strangelove" and "2001" to "Blade Runner," "Gattaca" and "The Matrix."
Your reaction is...?
Sacrilege! Any new film will only pale against the original artwork:3 (13.6%)
It'll probably suck but whatcha gonna do?:9 (40.9%)
Metropo-wha?:6 (27.3%)
This could be cool with some updated effects:2 (9.1%)
It's about time someone remade that moldy old film:2 (9.1%)
Total:22
Personally, I don't see much reason to remake it. The original is interesting mainly as a visual reminder that some folks in the 1920's feared a dystopian age brought about by technology and stratification of the classes, etc and nifty special effects which still hold up fairly well considering their age (and would be much less impressive knowing they were computer generated). But that vein has been mined enough since 1927 that I don't see what a new Metropolis would have to offer to the dicussion without straying significantly from the source material. At which point there's no reason to call it Metropolis except for profit.

Yes, I am aware that that is the most likely motivation.

Im lookin forward to it. But then again, I liked a lot of the re-makes that have come along. Peter Jacksons King Kong springs to mind......

Schuehly remaking Metropolis makes as much sense as Tarantino having a go at "Bambi" or Disney & Pixar rehashing The Exorcist.

Redundant, inappropriate, and guaranteed to be Shite.

I'm thinking a musical equivalent would be Christina Aguilera covering Bach's Brandenburg Concertos

In other news, the Earth revolves around the sun.

Here's hoping they make it with anatomically correct puppets with Hitler mustaches.

I did. Then I posted something really obvious. I realize that's probably annoying to some people but I went ahead and did it anyway. I'm not sure why, really.
