Personally, I don't see much reason to remake it. The original is interesting mainly as a visual reminder that some folks in the 1920's feared a dystopian age brought about by technology and stratification of the classes, etc and nifty special effects which still hold up fairly well considering their age (and would be much less impressive knowing they were computer generated). But that vein has been mined enough since 1927 that I don't see what a new Metropolis would have to offer to the dicussion without straying significantly from the source material.
