ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- In a troubling reversal, the nation's teen birth rate rose for the first time in 15 years, surprising government health officials and reviving the bitter debate about abstinence-only sex education.

Teen birth rate - up.

Teen STD rate - up.

Teen condom use - up??

And they say kids don't get enough exercise these days. Smiley: smile

For example, a biannual government survey of high school students found that the percentage of those who said they used a condom the last time they had sex rose to 63 percent in 2005, up from 46 percent in 1991.
If the birth rate went up from 2004 to 2005, I'd guess that the rate of condom use in 2003/2004 is more relevant than the rate of use in 1991.

"States instructions" = "Don't".

More like "State says don't = Do".

I mean, it's working for cigarettes. AmIright?

My point was that, under abstinence-only education, the states don't teach how to have sex responsibly. They just say "Don't do it" and expect that to work.

And, as you note, that's not really effective with drunken 16 year olds.

Umm...I think that don't have sex until your married is the best way to do it responsibly personally. Which is why it will never work.

"Don't" isn't teaching how to have sex responsibly. It's just teaching not to have sex.

Schools can and should teach how babies are made, how diseases are transmitted, and how contraceptives work. I would assume if you're teaching kids how babies are made, they would also learn how they are NOT made.

Whether and when to have sex is an upbringing, family-value thing.

That said, the study, as stated is preliminary and drawing any conclusions is premature.

Birth rates, preterm birth rates, live cesarean birth rates are all up (according to this CDC study). The rise in teen births may simply be attributed to the over-all rise in fertility.

Quote:
The report contains other significant findings:

The preliminary estimate of total births in the U.S. for 2006 was 4,265,996, a 3 percent increase -- or 127,647 more births than in 2005.

Birth rates increased for women in their twenties, thirties and early forties between 2005 and 2006, as well as for teenagers.

The cesarean delivery rate rose again in 2006, to 31.1 percent of all births, a 3 percent increase from 2005 and a new record high. The percentage of all births delivered by cesarean has climbed 50 percent over the last decade.

The preterm birth rate rose slightly between 2005 and 2006, from 12.7 percent to 12.8 percent of all births. The percentage of births delivered before 37 weeks of gestation has risen 21 percent since 1990.

The low birthweight rate also rose slightly in 2006, from 8.2 percent in 2005 to 8.3 percent in 2006, a 19 percent jump since 1990.

As a result of the increases in the birth rates for women aged 15-44, the total fertility rate –- an estimate of the average number of births that a group of women would have over their lifetimes –- increased 2 percent in 2006 to 2,101 births per 1,000 women. This is the highest rate since 1971 and the first time since then that the rate was above replacement -– the level at which a given generation can replace itself.

Yeah, I'm not referring to this study specifically. There's plenty of studies done showing that abstinence-only education is throwing money down a hole.

No it's not at all. It's saying, "Don't touch the tools until you are ready to make something."

Pretty good analogy though, tons of jokes in there somewhere.

IMO, it seems like the abstinence program isn't so much about preventing teen pregnancy as much as it's about parents that can't accept that their little darlings might actually want to bump uglies before they're good and properly wed.

I've decided it would probably have been less of a financial burden on me if me daughter had gone and gotten herself knocked up and married at 17. (hindsight eh)

I know someone who lost her virginity at 15. She still finds the song "Tubular Bells" a turn on. No alcohol was involved just a lot of curiosity.

What people need to start linking is the studies showing teens that have had an actual education in sexual health tend to have less babies and are less likely to get a bad case of the clap. There are lots of those and they help highlight the failure that is abstinence both in education on sexual health and the fact that it creates grossly impossible to meet standards, standards which when not met tend to create a whole slew of other problems in a how a person perceives both themselves and sex.

But hey, if you want to throw a bunch of tax payer money to religious groups and faith based initiatives to pander to the evangelical vote while creating problems that will put pressure on social programs 20 years down the line and see increase in public health problems like syphilis, all the power too you. I mean abstinence TRULY is the safest method, so lets do everything in our power to completely eliminate any education that doesn't deal with it. Forget that only a fraction of a fraction of the population ever reaches marriageable age with the curse intact.

I happen to know that she was 16 at the timeSmiley: blush

The guy was 15.

When I was 15, I spent my first period class as a library aid and making sure that the school library had every bit of information I could find on birth control, in the vertical files.

There are. Also, they also show that educated teens have sex earlier.

It's bad in that it destroys any political value of the research whatsoever.
