I've always made a point of meeting my MP (Member of Pariament) and any prospective candidates (I don't know how accessible US Congressmen are without a brown envelope full of cash) in advance of elections.

Curiously, while many of my friends also know their MP, none of them know who their MEP (Member of the European Parliament) is, even though he's an ex-TV actor who had the 1st on-screen gay kiss in UK.

Sadly, our upper house is appointed on the basis of having an ancestor who killed, shagged or took it up the dirtbox on behalf of the King, and they have no geographical constituency.

I could probably see my House rep if I had the gumption. Of course, he's retiring under a cloud of scandal in 2008 anyway. I don't think I'm going to be having a one-on-one with Barack Obama or Dick Durbin any time soon.

I know who my local rep is. Its this guy. But I met him at a party before I knew he was into politics. Nice fella too. He turned up for his first day in Parliament wearing a natty blue hemp suit.

So how since the June election, you've still not formed a Gubberment?

I know there's that whole Walloons versus Flemings argument, but I love that interviews with Belgians about the subject always gain the same response "No Government for 6 months? Haven't noticed any difference"

Go Belgium!

Keep doing the beer and choccies though, kthxla

I'm going to predict that the poll results here will be skewed from the norm. I'd be willing to bet Mr. King is not far off when it comes to the majority of the US population, and I can't say I disagree with him.

I have met my both of my Senators personally. While I know my Congressperson by name, I couldn't pick him out of a lineup. When you grow up with Tip O'Neil as your rep, and then Joe Kennedy, the next guy just isn't that memorable.

Nexa tells me she's met her Rep a few times. Apparently he tries to stay in touch with both of his constituents.

I know a few names that I can throw out, but not sure who or what they are.

Hilary is of course a senator, and I think Chuck Schumer is (or was) one too.

I know mine!!

We got the girls Olympia and Susan - Repulican Senators, and the boys Tom and Mike - Democratic Congresspeoples.

Mike Michaud is only on his first term. I don't know much about him yet. Tom Allen is ok, kind of a wallflower. Olympia Snow is a pretty dang liberal pubbie, and, for the most part well-loved around these parts. Susan Collins is just scary.

You have 2 Representatives? Did your district take a page out of the Chicago voting guidebook?

Yeah, we're not exactly an average slice of the American pie. But people do like pressing voting buttons.

Except when they have to drive to a polling place to do it.

Sam Farr is my house rep, easy to remember because he rocks it so hard

Boxer and Feinstein, well who could forget those histrionic ******** plus they've been around for awhile. Meh, got it easy in Cali, I did occasionally forget senators and reps in Virginia if they weren't Chuck Robb or John Warner.

No, but in Maine, where we only have two representatives for the whole state, most of us just kinda shrug and don't really think about who necessarily covers *our* district.

When campaigning. When voting she does exactly what the leadership tells her every time.

Fixed for accuracy. At least according to the Washington Post. Although that's a "for the current congress" record; I don't know how it carries into previous congresses.

On the Issues calls her a moderate based on her voting record.

I knew both senators and my rep. Helps that one of the senators is Mikulski who is one of the few woman senators.
Elne drew a blank on our new senator's name Ben Cardin, who replaced Paul Sarbanes. Otherwise she would have had both.

My congressional representative is Tammy Baldwin. I voted for her. I also voted for Russ Feingold twice. I voted against Herb Kohl last time.

Want to know my state rep and state senator? I can tell you. I could also go so far as to tell you Wisconsin's attorney general. Want to know my county exec or maybe my alderman? I obsess over local politics.

While you were talking about your budget fiasco a few months ago Joph, we were just getting started on delaying our budget.

Yeah, that's great and all, but meaningless. Having someone who votes your interests when the Whip tells them it's ok to because they have no chance of passing or defeating something really doesn't matter much. It's like having health insurance that only covers you when you're not sick or injured. She's caved and voted along party lines in every vote where there was any question of the outcome. When her vote literally was meaningless in terms of outcome she voted dead on the where the polling said Maine wanted her to.

Which is fine, it's her job to get elected and in her interest to stay in power, but measuring her or any legislator's relative effect on the process by just looking at raw voting records is pointless.

Hey, though, if the the interwebs say she's a moderate, I guess she is. Let's not delve too deeply into what her votes actually meant, that would take effort.
