...would be to name my dog Muhammad.
The Tribune wrote:
KHARTOUM, Sudan - A British teacher in Sudan was convicted Thursday of the less-serious charge of insulting Islam for letting her pupils name a teddy bear "Muhammad," and was sentenced to 15 days in prison and deportation to Britain, one of her lawyers said.

Gillian Gibbons could have received 40 lashes and six months in prison in the case if found guilty of the more serious charge of inciting religious hatred and given the maximum penalty.
[...]
Gibbons, 54, was arrested Sunday after complaints to the Education Ministry that she had insulted Prophet Muhammad, the most revered figure in Islam, by applying his name to a teddy bear.

She was found guilty of "insulting the faith of Muslims in Sudan" under Article 125 of the Sudanese criminal code, a less-serious charge than the original count of inciting religious hatred, said Ali Mohammed Ajab, a member of her defense team.
Seriously. WTF?

Yep, Seriously fUcked up.

But in response, if a non-christian teacher in Hicksville, Bible-belt-state, USA allowed 6-year-olds to name a toy clown "Jesus Christ", I wonder how the local townsfolk would respond.

You still have lynchings, right?

I could imagine the residents being upset. I'd have a real issue with the teacher being imprisoned by the government and threatened with lashings over it. And I doubt it would happen (with or without the lashings).

Even if a US teacher was fired over it from a public school, they'd probably have an airtight lawsuit against the school board on 1st Amendement grounds.

Hmm. Interestingly, in that country, the Gubberment is not allowed to interfere in the running of individual trials.

When in Rome?

Not defending it, but this case is an example of why I wouldn't go live/work in a country that operates Shariya

Sure. But I don't know this person's backstory or why they chose to go there. I just know that the arrest, trial and judgement strike me as asinine.

At the beginning of my World History class every day my Teacher asks if there was anything interesting in the news, I said that story and said how stupid it was and now half the class hates me...there isn't a single Muslim in the class either...

Hey don't worry little guy.

I'm sure the other half don't know you exist.

See, this whole case is Bullsh*t. I'm really at a loss for words >< I don't see how it would be that degrading anyways, kids LOVE their stuffed animals, and i highly doubt the teacher had any hidden agenda letting the CHILDREN name the teddy bear that.

Props to the British Muslim Leaders who have all condemnded this, but the bottom line is that when you go to a different country, you find out what's acceptable before you go.

In Saudi I'd be damaged for having a pint.

In USA I can be arrested for crossing the street where I'm not supposed to.

In Italy or Spain I'd get a duffing from the cops for entering a Cathedral wearing shorts.

I either decide to abide by their standards (whether they seem fUcked up or not), or I don't go.

She wasn't malicious, but she was naive. Stupid woman.

Degrees my dear. Degrees.

In the UK we don't have a death penalty, so the sliding scale has a different set of currencies.

Our country puts pedestrian's rights higher than USA does.

Some countries give Men greater rights than women, motorists more than walkers, and some, more rights for observing Moslems than infidels.

I'm desperately hoping this isn't a Gbajiesque attempt at implying that US laws are rational and proportional.

Nope. It's me noting that Nobby didn't pick a very good nor accurate example. I'm sure there's better examples of poorly executed American laws. He could have gone with the tried & true "18yr old charged with stat rape for fingering his 16yr old girlfriend", for instance.

Like this guy?

Prof. Felipe Fernandez-Armesto wrote:
"I come from a country where you can cross the road where you like," said the visiting professor of global environmental history at Queen Mary College, University of London. "It hadn't occurred to me that I wasn't allowed to cross the road between the two main conference venues."

The bespectacled professor says he didn't realise the "rather intrusive young man" shouting that he shouldn't cross there was a policeman. "I thanked him for his advice and went on."

The officer asked for identification. The professor asked for his, after which Officer Leonpacher told him he was under arrest and, the professor claims, kicked his legs from under him, pinned him to the ground and confiscated his box of peppermints.
He was cleared, but only after 8 hours in the cells.

Like I say, the whole world doesn't have the same rules as your front room.

I'm still allowed to grouse about them though, right? If it makes you feel better, if someone sid they were thrown in the pokey solely for jaywalking, I'd agree that it was pretty fucked up Smiley: smile

The Associated Press wrote:
ATLANTA - The Atlanta police officer who arrested a Tufts University professor for jaywalking has contradicted the man’s account, insisting he was in uniform at the time and saying the professor has no one to blame but himself.

Officer Kevin Leonpacher said if anything, “I used an excessive amount of discretion,” in the encounter that landed Felipe Fernandez-Armesto in jail.
Fernandez-Armesto, 56, who was arrested Jan. 4, said earlier in an interview that he was assaulted while crossing the street by a man he did not realize was a police officer.

“Where I’m from, you don’t associate young gentlemen in bomber jackets with the police. But he was extremely upset I had questioned his bona fides,” recalled Fernandez-Armesto, a prominent British historian and former professor at Oxford. He was visiting Atlanta for a history convention.

But Leonpacher said he asked Fernandez-Armesto why he didn’t follow the instructions of a uniformed officer, and the author shrugged him off and walked away.

“I told him, it’s gonna be awful silly if I have to take you to jail for jaywalking,” said Leonpacher, 28. He said he could not handcuff the professor by himself.
“He was swinging, kicking wildly,” Leonpacher said, adding that backup officers arrived almost immediately. In the incident report, he quoted the professor as saying, “Well now I believe that you are the police.”

Atlanta police had said that the disorderly conduct charge against Fernandez-Armesto was subsequently dropped. Later they said charge wasn’t officially dropped, and could be brought again, but that would be unlikely. For now, his record will show only an arrest.
That guy?

But thanks for the lesson in culture Smiley: laugh

True, but I didn't see international outrage at the plight of the British Professor like I do about the middle-aged dumpy scouse teacher. They both made a faux-pas in failing to understand local degrees of acceptability.

It's not complicated. It's called racism & xenophobia.

In any event, I never intended the thrust of my OP to be "that poor, poor woman." It was more of a "Well, that's a fucked up bit of law that'd throw you in jail and have you flogged."
