Just in time for the cold weatherFollow

It's been 85 degrees in my townhouse for the last week, ever since it snowed. I turned off the t-stats for both the upstairs and downstairs, as when this happened last spring I did that and after it cooled down I turned them back on again and it worked fine. So this time, no workey. I, being a typical male, grabbed my toolbox and went to the utility closet on the outside of my unit where the furnace and hot water heater are. I banged around with a screwdriver and hammer, making the appropriate grunting noises all to no avail. Finally yesterday I broke down and called a professional. They informed me that they would be happy to come over and take a look, and would send someone between noon and 2pm, but the gentleman on the phone stated it would be closer to noon.

I head home from work and arrive promptly at 11:50am. I open both doors up to get some airflow through there and plop down on the couch to await the arrival of said professional, and fall asleep. An hour later, I stir out of the sweatspot on the couch and dink around on the computer a bit. The guy finally calls at 1:45pm asking for directions. Color me suprised.

Anyways, he takes a look, banging around and swearing, making the appropriate grunting noises, and tells me I have a flow control valve out and the other one looks like it's working, but he suggests replacing it as well since labor is costly and it's best to do both at once and get it over with. I tell him fine, as it sounds like the problem was what I figured it was from researching on the internet. However, knowing it is likely the flow control valve that's the problem, and knowing what the hell a flow control valve looks like and how to replace it are two completely different areas.

So he looks the part up in his book, and it's listed at $251 each. Yep, $500 in parts without any labor factored in. That combined with the $3200 or so I'll be dropping on Lasik tomorrow, and I've come to the conclusion that my Christmas shopping is pretty much done for the year. I'd hope for a Christmas bonus to alleviate some of the cost, but since our company is being bought out at the end of the month I won't be holding my breath.

Is it Friday yet?

Ouch!! Five hundred plus just to FIX a furnace.

My husband broke the glass front on our wood-stove the other night, but decided he needed a fire last night anyways. We got smoked out of the house. Replacement glass is ordered - only $75.00 Smiley: smile

NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM THE MAINE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY
From Spokesman Steve McCausland - 626-3811-office or 441-6216-car phone

State Police say roads in central Maine have turned treacherous as freezing rain has made turned the surfaces of many roads to black ice. Troopers reports dozens of crashes along Interstate 95 and the northern end of the Maine Turnpike. The area hardest hit is from Gardiner to Sidney. Several cars have spun out of control and others have crashed causing personal injury. In addition to the Interstate, secondary roads in the Central Maine area have also been affected by the black ice. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution when driving in the next few hours until temperatures have risen and road crews have had a chance to sand and salt.

$251 is far to much for a control valve. What kind of furnace is it and how many BTU's?

I guess you could actually call it a boiler, I have hot water baseboard heating. The boiler/furnace itself is fine, it's just the control valves going between the furnace and the house. The brand on the unit is Burnham, couldn't tell you the model or anything.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd expect to pay between $35 and $75 for a flow control valve.

Looks like you done been ripped off.
