American Academy of Religion scheduled to discuss Bob

Some of the article wrote:
(AP) -- When some of the world's leading religious scholars gather in San Diego this weekend, pasta will be on the intellectual menu. They'll be talking about a satirical pseudo-deity called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, whose growing pop culture fame gets laughs but also raises serious questions about the essence of religion.

The appearance of the Flying Spaghetti Monster on the agenda of the American Academy of Religion's annual meeting gives a kind of scholarly imprimatur to a phenomenon that first emerged in 2005, during the debate in Kansas over whether intelligent design should be taught in public school sciences classes.

Supporters of intelligent design hold that the order and complexity of the universe is so great that science alone cannot explain it. The concept's critics see it as faith masquerading as science.

An Oregon State physics graduate named Bobby Henderson stepped into the debate by sending a letter to the Kansas School Board. With tongue in cheek, he purported to speak for 10 million followers of a being called the Flying Spaghetti Monster -- and demanded equal time for their views.

"We have evidence that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe. None of us, of course, were around to see it, but we have written accounts of it," Henderson wrote. As for scientific evidence to the contrary, "what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage."

Just in time for a Friday chuckle. Smiley: laugh

I can't imagine what's to discuss. Flying Spaghetti Monster makes much more sense than conventional religious beings. Smiley: schooled

NOVA on PBS just ran a program about the Dover Intelligent Design trial which examines that claims, the lawsuit, the court hearings themseves, etc. I missed it on TV but everyone I know who saw it said it was very well done and interesting. It just came up on PBS's website today for viewing. The whole thing is 108min long but it's broken into 12 chapters.

In other religious news, the Pope is looking to mend the Great Schism of 1054 and reunify the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.
The London Times wrote:
The Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches took tentative steps towards healing their 950-year rift yesterday by drafting a joint document that acknowledges the primacy of the Pope.

The 46-paragraph "Ravenna Document", written by a special commission of Catholic and Orthodox officials, envisages a reunified church in which the Pope could be the most senior patriarch among the various Orthodox churches.

Just as Pope John Paul II was driven by the desire to bring down Communism, so Pope Benedict XVI hopes passionately to see the restoration of a unified Church. Although he is understood to favour closer relations with traditional Anglicans, the Anglican Communion is unlikely to be party to the discussions because of its ordination of women and other liberal practices.

Unification with the Orthodox churches could ultimately limit the authority of the Pope, lessening the absolute power that he currently enjoys within Catholicism. In contrast, a deal would greatly strengthen the Patriarch of Constantinople in his dealings with the Muslim world and the other Orthodox churches.
Apparently it's being held up partially because of divisions between Orthodox leaders in the Constantinople* church and that of Moscow.

*I'm pretty sure the Orthodox church out of the former Byzantine capital is still considered that of Constantinople and not Istanbul. TMBG songs notwithstanding.

After Dracoid became an ordained minister in several online religious orders, I tried to do so myself.

I founded a number of virtual churches, but fate decreed that I'm now excommunicated from them all.

Hey now, no dining on deities!

Show me a molecule not made out of "God" and I will eat it. In the meantime, I shall eat God, breathe God, and serenely deny there is a big bearded fellow in the sky that has put down any rules for us to play by, except for those suggested to us out of our own evolved sense of fair play and empathy.
