Kao be warned do NOT click the images!!!!!

Remember your friend, the giant spider we were all trying to figure out? I went to the museum of Natural Sciences today and there was a place in the discovery room with a giant spider. Not yours, but I did ask a guide there who seemed to know a lot about local arachnids. She said your giant friend sounded exactly like a gray headed fishing spider. (also known as the Dark fishing spider

The spider they had at the museum was called a Golden Silk Spider. It was about the size of my palm. It lives here too. Both are harmless and great hunters. Not that that matters. I'll be killing them as I see them myself.

I would be more worried that this spider thought your home was a good place to hunt insects.

My husband and I recently took a trip to Washington, DC and one of the places I had to hit up was the Zoo. We were walking through the Amazon exhibit, and as we came upon the exit, there was a large square section with a huge spider up in a web. I got a little closer, as I am terrified of spiders but love to see them under glass where they can't reach out and rip my face off.

I got closer and closer, then I realized... there was no glass. They had this spider exhibit (the spider was about the size of my fist) right next to the exit so you had to walk by it, and there was no freaking glass there.

It probably took my husband a good ten minutes to convince me to go through the door, and that was only because I didn't see the thing move once in that entire time.

I still shudder when I think of that thing...

I was thinking more along the lines of checking for termites. A hunting spider of that size hanging around may be an indicator of lots of insect food. Hopefully he was just lost, having termites sucks, but better to know now rather then later when they have chewed on more of your house.

We just had our home inspected for termites and we are fine. We live in a heavily wooded area and there's just no way to keep every bug out - I wish there were. I suspect that bugger came down my chimney and found her way inside.

Bad move.

You'll probably find more of them as it starts to cool off, too. Bugs don't like the cold either. In the fall, I stock up on bug spray, haha.

found in the eastern half of the U.S. and Canada, from New England and adjacent portions of southeastern Canada, south to Florida, and west to South Dakota and Texas.

Have fun with that!

#16REDACTED, Posted: Nov 04 2007 at 6:47 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Spiders are great. I've got two tarantulas at the house now, and I used to have a spider that resembled the dark fishing spider in the OP. Not sure what happened to that one though... I think its most likely loose in the house somewhere.
