So I decided to start a new game yesterday and it was a toss up between Civ4, AoE3 and Oblivion(IV). I went with the Gold edition of OblivionIV (includes all the expansions). Talk about an involved RPG! If this was an MMO it would certainly take the cake.

So far I'd say 10/10.

Anyone else playing this game?

I wasn't too hot on it for 360, any better for PC?

The graphics are nice and shiny. The only issue I've found technically with the game is if your DVD Rom is even a bit fritzy, it can cause some rendering issues. As for the game play and customization, it's quite spectacular.

I've started it a few times. I've had to reload my pc several times, as I had tried upgrading to Vista and it wasn't working out so hot so I ended up reloading again and keep losing my progress.

I tend to play good guys so the first time I didn't do any of the thieve's guild stuff, or the dark brotherhood. I finally broke down and started a bad guy and became an assasin doing all the dark brotherhood quests, as well as the theive's guild stuff. I definitely recommend the dark brotherhood quests, it was a blast. One in particular where you end up in a house full of people and have to kill everyone without them realizing it is you. It's very cool the way even the surrounding people in towns and cities progress in their aside conversation, as you start doing more the people on the streets end up talking about you.

As for the main storyline, I never progressed very far as I kept getting distracted by the side quests. I started it up again this weekend though with the goal of concentrating on that, just to see what the end of the main story is like.

Definitely a fun game. It lacks the social aspect of an MMO obviously, but as far as the content, strategy, and gameplay goes it's very good.

I had fun playing it. I love the open-endedness of it.

Still need to go back and play it as a caster sometime.

The only thing I didn't care for was the scalability of every enemy. Rats still attack you when you're level 15, only now they are level 15 too. That goes against my EQ-indoctrinated heart. Fire beetles don't attack after you level up-- it's just that simple.

Huh, I never thought about it that way. I just accept it as extra experience.

Stupid rats are annoying, though.

I played it through to the end. I also had issues with the scaling of the enemies; it never felt like you were achieving anything if anyone could go and fight anywhere at anytime. I like old-school RPG's in which if you tried to go into more difficult areas before you had a strong party you got spanked. In addition the main quest storyline was fairly boring which was surprising because the side quests were great, particularly all the guild quests. Worth the money alone for the guild quests, in my opinion.

Have a great time with it!

That's the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard of. I'll never touch the game again due to that alone.

Just pick up a high-level item that has thorns. The rat attacks and dies instantly.

Is there only one Oblivion with a lot of add-ons or are there new versions? I remember playing the game several years ago (or so it seems) and not digging the interface to much. It seemed clumsy and really simplified. I got stuck in a lot of lame areas to.

Talk about an involved RPG!

Talk about one, then, because Oblivion blows. It's not involved. It's follow the arrow quests with nice graphics. It's a massive step down in depth and gameplay from Morrowind. You'll see what I mean after playing it for maybe 12 hours.

What games do you like Smash. You seem t ohate every single one, just curious if you actually enjoyed anything. And I mean anything at all. Like puppies, or rainbows, or a nice cup of hot chocolate while watching the rain fall. You know.

I like lots of games. I've liked nearly everything Valve has released in the past 20 years, I liked Oblivion's predecessor, Morrowind quite a bit. I played thousands and thousands of hours of EQ so I'd say I liked that fairly well most of the time. I just value gameplay over graphics quality, which means I'm going to be disappointed in most new console player driven games that come to market these days.

I thought Bioshock was worth the time and lots of fun, but clearly not very replayable. I loved Rome Total War, but was a little tired of the genre when Medieval came out, but I think it's a well done game.

Oblivion just happens to be one of the most vastly overrated games in history. Yes, the graphics were amazing, but really how far does that go? How many people are playing at resolutions and settings to even see what they're paying for?

I had oblivion for the 360, it was a good game, it was a great change from elder scrolls 3. That game was way too detailed for me to even understand it.

I heard theres a new story, something like nights of the nine, i'll have to fire it up and try it out, when i'm not on halo3 of TF2.

This would be exactly my point in a nutshell. He's who they design games for 95% of the time. A 3 minute learning curve and no depth. Who can blame them? His money's as good as mine. not that I'd pay for software, but notwithstanding that...

The arena quest was fun, as was the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guild quests. Do, set the game at its highest difficulty, or like what Smash says it becomes follow the arrow and boring quickly. On difficult, you don't find health/fatigue/sorcery potions every other container/chest and learning to block with a shield/weapon becomes critical or you're dead really fast in close combat.

I played the PC version for a month to test out my new comp before LoTRO came out. It looked great but as Smash said, it was a style over content IMO.

I havnt played it again since LoTRo came out.

I think it would be a great console game, but whats the point of an rpg if theres no-one else in the world with you?

Actually, now that you mention it, when I initially bought the game and started playing it I quit for that very reason. The interface is very clearly designed for a console game. It threw me off till I got used to it, as I don't really do console games much anymore.

Good lord, I only lasted about a week and a half with LoTRo. It just didn't grab me at all. I started several characters just to see the introductory areas and quests, got bored real fast.

I think I put about 150 hours into Morrowind on just my mage character. Easily another 50 on my thief character. The expansions were fantastic themselves. I think I only stopped playing because I killed some dude who needed to be alive for some little sidequest in the Tribunal expansion and I foolishly saved over it.

If oblivion was anything like Morrowind I'd buy a 360 for it, but that apparently seems not to be the case. Of course that is the opinion of two people so far so I don't know.

It's like Morrowind without skills, levitation, leveling, or plot. Aside from that, close to identical.

No skills what the hell? Or even levitation?

Levitation was one of the best parts of morrowind. I could levitate above enemies and use that gauntlet that I got from one of those House Telvani guys to summon the atronachs, then summon a golden saint or something, then just rain down fire and lightning. Option B was to use A Fiercely Roasting spell or something: 100 fire damage with an enormous radius and then residual poison damage was just beautiful to watch. Of course that was with my squishy mage who couldn't fight close to save it's life.

That's not even mentioning the amazing view you could see just levitating over Tamriel. I would love just levitating across the country, and you couldn't even get into the Telvani towers without it.

Each to his own. I came from the all-but deserted world of EQ, and after wandering over to Elendilmir ( Aussie/NZ server) from Meneldor, joined a really active guild (kin) and have been having a total blast. Its got a bueatifully rendered world, with a good population of generally mature players, and enough content being added to keep a casual gamer like myself happy for a very long time. And I've only just started looking at the crafting and PVP aspects of the game. The latest (free) expansion has been keeping us very occupied for the last week or so....FFS, its even got a Balrog! that I havnt met yet but looks like a good fight.

I know people have slagged it off for a percieved lack of 'end game', but the fellowship hasn't left Rivendell yet...theres lots more to come.

Besides what other game do you know of that has a story line that is going to go to Mordor? Smiley: jawdrop
