A sad day for Nobby, and for puns.

First the Banksy massacre, and now this!

Quote:
For generations, they have enjoyed the right to drive as fast as they wish on their nation's motorways. But now every Porsche owner's dream is set to be shattered. Yesterday, the governing party voted to impose a blanket 80mph limit.

The German Autobahn or motorway is the planet's last bastion of unlimited foot on the floor driving. The country has more than 12,000km (750 miles), of such motorway, and driving as fast as you like or can, is permitted on 6,000km of the network.

Its only rivals in terms of limitless speed of driving are hardly an equal match: they include the winding roads of the Isle of Man, which has no motorway, a state in the American far west and a state in India.

The SPD's new initiative came only days after the Nobel laureate Al Gore criticised Germany for not having motorway speed limits during a conference on climate change in Berlin.

Thanks a lot, Al Smiley: motz

Huh, I was just thinking of the Autobahn this morning on the way to work. Was comparing the pros and cons of our 65 MPH parkway and the Limitless Autobahn.

I personally have only been on the Autobahn a couple times when I was younger and visiting Germany. Guy I was with went ~110MPH in a Geo.

I wonder what State they are referring to there? I know Montana opened up their speed limit to "safe and prudent" but after about a year and a half of out of state motorists coming in and killing themselves on the highways they got sick of cleaning up the messes and put speed limits back in place again.

My dad used to do a steady 140mph (210km/h), on the French motorway between Paris and Britanny, when we went on holiday. I remember watching the little arrow go up and up and hoping it would go past 250km/h.

Well, I was 7.

I'll start by saying that at my age I only drive at sensible speeds as I'm a responsible road user. cough.

Will be interesting to see if Ze Chermans enforce the laws - somehow I doubt that even those officious bastards would stand between a driver and his Gott-given right to aim for the sound barrier in his Beemer or Merc.

Even though the standard limit on northern Euopean Roads is 130Kph (110Kph in wet weather) nobody takes a blind bit of notice. I'm often overtaken in France/Belgium/Holland while doing 120-130mph and never seen anyone stopped.

There's a big difference between a posted limit and a policed limit.

Those were some fun times. I got pulled over for doing 88 during the "reasonable and prudent" time. No ticket though, because I would have fought that one tooth and nail and he knew it.

In Belgium there is no 130/110 kph, only 120 and 90 on smoggy days (near certain cities). Ofcourse, even at 140kph, you'll get passed regularly on Belgian roads, easily even. We're regular bast**ds on the road here, even if only to compensate all the trafic jams we encounter all the time.

The Isle of Man limits apply in out of town areas.
I heard they were trying to put limits on those too, but I think they will be resisted.

I said 130Mph, but yeah, you Belgians do like to whizz down the road

Ok, that's not as frequent, to say the least Smiley: grin, misread that actually.

I'm glad I've already been to Germany this year. I got my rental car up to 240kph going from Ansbach to Frankfort. I guess next years trip won't be quite as much fun.

Yeah I think doing 150 is a $5 fine payable in cash to the officer who pulls you over.
