You could upgrade to XP...

Have you played any of the DX10 games yet?

I have an 80gig hard drive almost entirely full of unplayed betas that I haven't uninstalled, so, I'm pretty sure I've got you beat.

Directx 10, in the few games that support it so far, is totally worth it. Flight suimulator x, bioshock, company of heroes all look amazing in Directx 10 on an 8800 gtx. Havn't had a chance to play with it in SLI mode yet. It's mainly a combination of little things that add up to a huge effect. actual grass blades, Raytraced lighting effects on top of better smoke effects, more realistic water surface effects.

Once more of the MMO's start taking advantage of directx 10 fully it will be worth upgrading just for that.

how are you liking the 8800? i am getting 2 of them soon, hoping i have a large enough PSU to deal with them in SLI.

will they run well under XP as i REFUSE to install vista right now on my production and game box. i use it for video editing and playing wow. about the ONLY 2 things it does. premier 6.5 does not work well on Vista (i know i have tested it on an other system) and wow has some known issues that can be worked around, but id rather not. not to mention i refuse to pay $800 for the ultimate vista just to have access to 100% of the network features i need in my LAN.

Yes. Also they'll save you money on a space heater.

They'll run just fine under XP, you just won't get to see shiny shiny Drectx 10 thingies. Mine is absolutly stable, I have't been able to get it to hang for any reason so far despite throwing heavy graphics loads at it at 1900 x 1200 resolution. Its definitly more stable than the 7950 gx2 was. We have 2 of them at work on the video machine running in SLI mode, but I can't put that one through its gaming paces for obvious reasons.

Fan noise isn't too bad on the work ones. I watercooled the home one using a koolance kit. Once budget allows I'll throw another one in there. I need to upgrade the processor soon too.

I work here, and at my other main job in a state government IT office, where I work as a software compliance/ordering everythign/workstation buildout/server monkey type job.

This job funds my computer habit!

Its a good idea in theory, but there are a couple problems with it. The main one being that it appeals primarily to the enthusiast gaming market, many of which already have a SLI array in their computer so they don't have a free slot in their motherboard. The second main issue is that there are only a very few games that support it so far, and the ones that do are using it poorly. Just like not enough explosion debris isn't realistic looking, an explosion that spawns 4 billion fragments of the same debris piece isn't realistic either.

I'd really like to see them integrate this into a graphics card actually. That or an on board chip. Until that happens though, it's just going to be a niche product.

ahh thank you.

not worried about DX10 as the only games i play are WoW, Overlord from time to time and CnC3 even less often the overlord.

The cards are a gift so that is a nice thing to have.

how hot do they get and what size PSU would you recommend?

currently have a 700W PSU (antec IIRC) truepower II
AMD 939 chip 3800+ X2
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
PC3200 ram 2G
sATA seagate 250G
DVD combo 16x drive

that is all that runs inside the system i also have a firewire external MyBook 1TB drive and an other internal sATA WD drive that has Linux on it and is not accessed during winXP time. although i am sure it pulls some power.

Dual 8800's draw an insane amount of power. Something along the order of 200w each just to fire. The absolute minimum power supply i'd personally attempt to boot with both of those in there would be a 650w, assuming you don't have an insane number of fansYou'd probably be better off with a 700 or 850 watt.
