This needed a thread of its own.

For those not following the Rugby World Cup or the related thread. . .

England have beaten France in the World Cup Semi-Final. . . in Paris!

Not the best game ever, with some basic schoolboy mistakes on both sides, but the win was down to sheer determination. Lots of blood and brutality, and France did put up a decent fight. But they lost Smiley: waycool

As agreed in the wager, I shall now pick out a suitable Avatard for RedPhoenixxx to use for 7 days.

And Redphoenixx. . . Poitiers, Crecy, Agincourt, and now the Stade de France.

Aux Rosbifs, la Victoire!

Yup. One or two moments during tonight's game were brutal as hell.

Did I mention we won? Against France? In Paris?

How to determine a player's position in (American) Football:

Line him up in front of a brick wall and tell him to run into it.

If he bounces off and runs around the side, make him a running back.

If he hits the wall and goes through it, he's a lineman.

If he simply walks up to and around the wall, he's a quaterback.

If he picks you up and rams your head through the wall, he's a rugby player

All football pads add are more mass and weight to the player.

American football hits harder then rugby. Get over it.

I'm sure South Africa will enjoy beating England much more than they would have France.

So they don't offer any protection? enabling players to take hits without feeling them?

I've played Rugby league, union, American football and real football. any trust me American football is on the same level *** Football in terms of pain from recieving a tackle, it hurts if you get hit in the wrong place but not to anything like the same level as a rugby hit.

In fact the only time i ever really felt a American football hit was when someone used a helmet on a non padded area and i would still take that over a Spear tackle off a Back row forward.

when you consider Rugby league in particular, as a forward you are generally running full tilt into 2-3 people equal size and weight with nothing to stop a hit, you expect to get that 200+ times a game at least, a Prop would expect to take 30-40 drives a game.

In American football it is extremely rare to have a unrestricted front on hit on a player, usually tackles are made by players breaking off a blocker or from the side while chasing, runinng backs carry the ball maybe 20 times and are forcefully tackled maybe once per game? the rest of the time it's a scrummige line pile up.

Wide reciever's might touch the ball 3-4 times per game and almost never get big tackles on them, tothe point it's a game highlight if one does.

The only player who gets it in the neck is the Quaterback but when you have linemen making 8 sacks a year making the Probowl it's hardly common is it.

What you forget is that many Brits watch 16-20 games of American football a season and highlights of all the other games, while an American might watch 1 game of Rugby in a lifetime, making us far more able to judge the qualities of each.

On a more important note, we are missing our resident Frenchman, missing presumed drunk while drowning his sorrows.

I hope he hasn't got Alcohol poisoning.

Point 1: They have to beat the Puma's yet and they are not in any way a push over.

Point 2: thats the sort of attitude that sent the Roo's, Kiwi's and Irish back home early, no game is won before the final whistle, it's certainly not won before you even get to the point where your in the game at all!

The same group of people playing Rugby vs. American football/Gridiron, the rugby play will have the far harder hits and hits more often. The rules of the games are different and players who excel at one may not excel at the other. In Americian football/Gridiron you run for like 11 seconds than take a 40 second break, at least, with many subtitutions. This enables 400+ lb men to compete as linebackers. Those 400+ lb linebackers can hit pretty damn hard even if you are wearing padding, but they could never last in a game of Rugby with its limited subtitutions and timeouts, and with almost constant running. It's kinda of apples vs oranges b/c of the different rules.

I'm going to go out on a crazy limb and guess that you weren't tackled by a 290 pound guy with 8% body fat who runs a 4'7 40. Rugby's a great and distinct game from American football, but in no way is it somehow more physically demanding at the professional level. It just isn't in the same way that than Cricket doesn't demand better hand eye coordination than baseball. Neither are men's games like Hurling.

For the sake of argument.

Lets compare these two videos. Both are the first results when typing in rugby hits and football hits into the search box on youtube.

Rugby

Football

What do you want me to say? The proof is in the results.

"Rugby is a contact sport. Gridiron is a collision sport"

I wouldn't claim 1 is more physically demanding than the other.

My point is that Rugby inflicts more pain & damage than Football, and calls for more blind courage.

Both are violent, but with 0 protection and a more aggressive set of rules, Rugby offers a greater chance of fractures and body damage.

Yeah, no. If the size and velocity of both games were the same, sure. It isn't.

Indeed. This is why it's widely known that racewalking is far more dangerous than Formula 1.

All a helmet is a metal surface to deliver blows with. Think rugby but with players carrying blunt force objects.

I remember reading a couple of years ago that a rugby player had suffered an infected forearm and ultimately had to be put on IV antibiotics.

The cause? Months before, a collision had led to an opponent's tooth being broken off and lodged in his forearm near the elbow. He didn't notice... for months.

You don't often hear about that sort of thing in American football.

(Though in fairness, I'm not sure if this demonstrates that rugby is a tougher sport or if the partcipants are just dumber)
