But Aahnie vill shtill be aple to shmoke a zigar in his manshun, amirite?

Bloody ridiculous.

Smoking 2 cigarettes at once just to express my freedom from american oppression.

Much easier than chucking tea-chests into a river.

It was actually a Katie thread. I merely took the unpopular position that making it illegal to smoke in your car was a bad precedent.

Score one for me!

Despite the depth of the article, I couldn't get why they banned smoking in apartments.

The neighbours? The cleaning-lady? Global Warming?

I like how they will only enforce it if the neighbors complain. How else were they going to enforce it? Random smoke checks? Mandate super sensetive smoke alarms that alert the police?

People will still be able to smoke on Belmont's streets and sidewalks as long as they are not loitering near the entrance to homes or businesses and in parking lots and designated smoking areas.

If I were his teacher, I would write "clarity error" all over his paper.

On topic : I only smoke around the house once or twice a day (hooka , ice, milk or fruit base with generally fruit tobacco , all of the roommates gather around it at night to smoke a bowl or two to unwind) so this effects me very little. I see it as giving *** neighbors another means for petty grievance where they can have "the law" on their side.

Won't be long before that spreads.
In london, if you have a council property, which I do, and you get a workman round, they ASK you not to smoke 30 minutes before the visit. They haven't banned smoking at home (yet) but if you smoke while the workman is there, they can leave the premises with the job half finished.

Ah, so it only applies if you're renting an apartment? Can't people jsut open the window? Also, is it ok to smoke if you own the place?

I realise you're not the sponsor of the bill, but you usually ahve the answers...

True, but it's all part of the same logic of protecting people who work from passive smoking on their work premise. If their "work premise" happens to be your house, it's normal that you shouldn't smoke before they come. Their right not to passive smoke at works, trumps your right to smoke.

But in the the US case, it's clearly nothing to do with people at work.

I live in Cali, but not in Belmont, which is pricey and chi-chi even by San Francisco standards.

Here's a local article about the ban, though.

And the central issue appears to be secondhand smoke, still.

the article wrote:
"Secondhand smoke cannot be vented easily," she said. "It expands into all available spaces in an apartment building."

Being Belmont, I wouldn't be surprised to find that it's a ploy to get those lower class renters out of town once and for all. Condo owners? Pfft, buy a real house or go back to Moraga, ya posers.

We are actually looking at homes for sale in Belmont.

Its not as expensive as you might think.

Millbrae, Burlingame, and some others are more expensive.

I'm having a hard time understanding the logic behind this. It's not as if Apartments and Condos are anything like a communal house. Each Unit has it's own HVAC unit to disperse the smoke and a simple charcoal filter would solve any "smell" issues that might arise.

The whole damn ban just looks like fluff to me.

I don't care how many laws they make. What's the law now? You can only smoke in your apartment, under your blanket, with all the lights out? Is that the rule now? The cops are outside: "We know you have the cigarettes. Come out of the house with the cigarettes above your head." "You'll never get me, copper. I'm not comin' out, see! I've got a cigarette machine right here in my bedroom."

Warning labels are the greatest thing to happen to cigarettes. Nothing says cool like something that the government wants you to stay away from.

A giant skull and cross bones branded cigarettes would be gold.

Yes, by all means. Move to Idaho and join a militia, cause that's not repressive at all.

Well, I'm a smoker, and this would suck for a lot of people, but frankly it's right. If I wasn't a smoker and my building reeked of cigarrettes it's almost equivalent to burning hazardous chemicals in your living room, which is quite illegal in most places.

I already smoke outside of my apartment due to the kids though, so to me it's not as big of an issue.

They banned smoking in bars here a long time ago and I was up in arms about it. After a month or so I found it was actually better, the bars didn't have that gross smog that clings to your face anymore. Now if I go to a place that has smoking inside (native owned establishments in certain areas still can) I find it rather disgusting and I can't bring myself to light a cigarette inside.

So I'm torn really, I don't think the government should be able to tell me what I can/can't do in my own home, but to me it's just common decency to not smoke in your apartment if it's bothering your neighbours.
