This came up in super secret Admin channel today. So what's your take?

If you were to nuke the polar ice caps, would you be...
furthering global warming by prematurely melting the polar ice caps :17 (43.6%)
stopping global warming by introducing nuclear winter :22 (56.4%)
Total:39

Well it seems as if it's not just as clear-cut as that. Melting the ice caps would ruin the ocean heat conveyor systems and, for instance, stop drawing warm water and air to northern Europe. This would instigate a cooldown of the region and stop pumping moist air into the northern hemisphere. Desalinating the oceans will cause its freezing temperature to raise somewhat, causing it to freeze over easier. So, instantaneously melting the icecaps may possibly cause a more widespread ice cover.

So, in relation to your poll, my answer would have to be "Other".

I think the general consensus in the scientific community is that global warming will probably start off a new ice age anyway...

lower salinity in the oceans stopping or changing the major ocean currents forcing a global cool down on a massive scale.

Mother Nature will see our messing with her as nothing more than a bunny in the path of an 18 wheeler... long term anyway.

Nuclear Winter relies on two things:

A lot of nukes going off in several different places around the world.

And most importantly, those nuclear bombs dispersing massive amounts of small particles high up into the atmosphere, where they will stay for years or decades, reflecting sunlight away from the Earth.

Now a Nuke over the North Pole isn't going to disperse anything except water vapour. I believe the ice cover over most of the South pole is a couple of kilometers thick, so Nukes there are only going to disperse water vapour as well, unless the Nukes are detonated over some areas of rocky shoreline, or (comparatively small) areas of rocky mountain.

I really don't know if pure water vapour will stay in the upper atmosphere the same way as "vapourised" buildings, soil, infrastructure, people, etc. I don't know if that water vapour would form enveloping cloud cover that hangs around for decades and reflect sunlight away in the same way, if there weren't any tiny solids for that water vapour to precipitate around.

What would be sure would be that there is less polar ice reflecting sunlight away, and more dark ocean water absorbing sunlight and warmth. I don't know which effect would be strongest: the extra warmth from more open water and more exposed soil in the South Pole, the cooling effect (only in the North!) of the saline mix in the sea-water being disturbed, or the possible cooling effect of extra water vapour in the upper atmosphere.

Better hurry up or there will be no more ice caps to nuke!

Of course with the opening of the NW passage (due to Global Warming) during even the winter months means Canada, Denmark and Russia are all fighting over Arctic Sovereignty, with the United States stating that they don't give a flying f'uck who claims it they will consider it international waters. Nuclear war in the north is a slight possibility!

Stop watching Al Gore movies. Plus, a few more feet of sea level and I'm beachside, baby.

Gore? He made those pirate movies, right? I don't remember any discussion about global warming in the Caribbean.

Besides, a few more feet and *I'd* be seaside too. Well, bayside, maybe.

I really don't know

See what I did there? I made your post both more concise and more accurate.

It's like magic, really.

I found it rather an entertaining movie. I recommend it.

I thought I was insane for thinking we should nuke the deserts around the world. According to the poll so far, I guess I'm not.

Yes! And then we can use the resulting continent-sized, two-mile-thick sheets of glass as lenses to melt the icecaps!
