An MIT student wearing what turned out to be a fake bomb was arrested at gunpoint Friday at Logan International Airport and later claimed it was artwork, officials said.

Star Simpson, 19, had a computer circuit board and wiring in plain view over a black hooded sweatshirt she was wearing, said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the commanding officer at the airport.

"She said that it was a piece of art and she wanted to stand out on career day," Pare said at a news conference. "She claims that it was just art, and that she was proud of the art and she wanted to display it."

Simpson was charged with disturbing the peace and possessing a hoax device. A not guilty plea was entered for her and she was released on $750 bail.

During the hearing, Simpson smiled as she entered wearing a T-shirt and sandals. After she posted bail, she left in a taxi with a man who identified himself as her boyfriend, but neither would answer more questions from reporters.

I was never under the impression that Boston police wouldn't stupidly overreact to some sort of incident like this, but I did think it was pretty unlikely that they'd find something that looked even LESS like a bomb than a lite brite does.

Um, yeah, that's what he said, moron.

What I found amusing was this chick's bizarrely blonde-dyed frizzy hair. She looks sorta like Mikey from "American Choppers".

You're all right. I can't think of any reason why the average rent-a-cops at an airport would think that a wiring block with taped wires and a battery could possibly be a bomb.

She was an idiot to do that. Plain and simple. She couldn't wait to show her boyfriend her crappy "artwork" until they were in the car? What part of "Don't take anything into an airport that looks remotely suspicious or out of the ordinary" is confusing for people? It's just common sense...

The thing doesn't look like a bomb, but it does kinda look like one to and the police are not going to overlook something that could be dangerous just because it kinda doesn't look like something dangerous. It's the same reason they would stop and talk to you if you were carrying a plastic sword. On the otherhand it's a fucking battery with some wires, once they realised it wasn't a bomb they should have just let her go.

Sure. They probably should have. However, if you've paid any attention to the news over the last year or so, there have been numerous occurrences at airports that most experts believe are "trial runs" for terrorist attacks. What's happening is that people will try to go through airport security with common ordinary (and non-dangerous) items configured in such a way as to make them look like they could be dangerous. So a block of cheese with wires sticking out of it taped to a battery. Or modeling clay (also wrapped in wires with a battery).

In most cases these are things that no sane/normal person would do. But since they're not "actually" dangerous, they haven't actually threatened anyone. The assumption by most security experts is that these are attempts to probe airport security and see what they can get through security. A secondary effort appears to be to attempt to apply pressure to security at airports to be cautious about questioning such odd objects unless they are sure it's actually something dangerous. The thinking being that if you cause a ruckus every time those "stupid airport security guys" mistake a block of cheese for an explosive device, some of the morons out there in Americaland will pressure those cops to be more careful, and they'll maybe miss something that's really dangerous.

So yeah. It's not like this is out of the blue. I'll repeat what I said earlier. It's just not that hard. Don't take anything into an airport that could remotely be seen as something dangerous. Don't wrap wires and stuff into a bundle. Don't bring a big battery attached to some odd looking device. Heck. Don't bring anything electronic that isn't clearly a standard commercial product. I just don't see how this is such a hard thing for people to do...

Probably just trying to draw attention to the fact that the BoToxBoSox are in the process of dumping the AL East which they at one point held a 14.5-game lead over the Yank-me's.

I'm sure that's not true. I'd imagine someone with as little knowledge of ordinance as you have would run away in tears. Cops, however, should be trained better than that.

They're taking the luxury they have of setting up their rotation for the playoffs. We're a little beyond caring about AL East division banners at this point.

True, dat. The rotation does need quite a lot of setting up. And according to recent history there's a better percentage to go into the playoffs as a wildcard team than a division winner.

Hi, moron. The Medical School is part of the University. As is the Business School, also in Boston. See, "Universities" have subdivisions often referred to as "Schools". I KNOW it's complicated and difficult to understand. Well at least for anyone who hasn't attended any of them, certainly.

Actually, I took the bar tending course offered by Harvard University. 2 days got me a nifty Harvard University certificate I framed next to the English degree I received from Umass Boston.

And while I'm bored enough to continue being pedantic about this, despite your lack of referancing it, the Harvard University School of Public Health does have it's address in Boston.

So you win, for now.

****.

All of my Harvard lectures have been to medical students or Business students studying healthcare management; some in Cambridge, but most in Boston, south of the river from Cambridge (Longwood Avenue rings a bell).

And besides, R-tard, it was a fUcking joke, not a philosophical challenge.
