Peter Jackson is producing a remake of the 1954 film "The Dambusters" which, itself is based on real events involving the British Air Force and their attempts to using a specialized bomb to destroy reinforced German dams. He is, from my limited understanding, attempting to keep the film true to events.

In the real events and in the original film, there is a black Labrador named Nigger who plays a modest role as mascot including having his name used as the codeword for the mission. When the 1954 film was released in the United States, the dog's name was dubbed to "Trigger" to avoid offense. American audiences were left to know the dog's real name only as a catalyst for going insane in your hotel room and attacking groupies. Jackson still reportedly doesn't know if he'll change it or not.

Should Nigger's name be changed?
Yes:13 (23.6%)
No:42 (76.4%)
Total:55

Well, I'm sure if he doesn't change it loads of people will have their knickers in a twist over it. I think he should just so that his film doesn't become all about that and nothing else.

This is a tricky one.

Once the world has changed, you can drop "affirmative action", because it's not needed any more. The question is, has America changed enough that this particular usage of the word can be looked back on as a hokey historical oddity, which just doesn't carry any sting these days?

It would be nice if that was the case, but I couldn't tell you.

If I was in Peter Jackson's place, I'd get a big net/media meme going, asking African Americans to send in opinions on the matter, while the film is in production.

Normally I'd leave everything up to artistic judgement, but this is one of the few cases I'd really want public feedback on before making a decision.

P.S. I also think that the only people who should be consulted in this case are African Americans themselves.

I agree. If it isn't changed, that's the only thing some people will will focus on and the rest of the movie will be lost.

If Pulp Fiction taught us anything, it's that Samuel Jackson has no problem saying "nigger".

Maybe he can forward his findings to Peter Jackson.

Everytime someone has to say the dogs name a black person should be brought in to drop the N-bomb, that way it will be perfectly kosher.

I voted no, simply because it will provide me hours of entertainment with people like Jesse and Al banging their fists and shouting "Racism" at the tops of their lungs.

This was my thinking, as well.

FUCk people who get Huckleberry Finn banned. Accept that the word was once used by people other than blinged-out rappers.

Edit: fUCking filter.

I remember watching a Smallville episode where Martha was reading Huck Finn to Jonathan while he was in a coma or some such. I leaned forward on my seat wondering if she was coming to a sentence with the oft-repeated N word in it, knowing it wasn't going to happen but still anticipating the uproar if the then WB actually had the balls to do it. Of course it didn't happen, and I ended up giving up on Smallville cause I got tired of the whole Lana drama, and of waiting anxiously for them to kill off that annoying **** Chloe.

But I digress...

And should they change the name of the enemy to 'Lolbifronsitania' to avoid upsetting Ze Chermans?

Pfft.

The dog's name was 'N1gger'. Fact.

No change, I say.

(And when you say 'African Americans' I'm assuming you mean black people, right?

When I was a young boy, my father, told me 'they' didn't like being called 'black' and that I was to refer to 'them' as 'coloured' folk.

True story.

I've gone through several revisions of today's 'acceptable' term - Negro, Coloured, of colour, Afro-Caribbean, black, African Caribbean, of African Origin and IC3.

I despise racial abuse. I hate it when people use the word 'gay' as an insult.

But when PC is used to attack people who simply don't follow socio-linguistic fashion, I feel the urge to stab.

Once America has matured enough to release Song of the South, people will stop taking offense to the "N" word. Neither of which will ever happen.

Lol, the "N" word? guess you got a long way to go, eh.

If nigger was the name of the dog in RL, I'd leave it.

Edit, guess we got a long way to go if Alla's filter kicks it out too.
