It's one sound, recorded once in about 1951 for a character who was going to have his leg bitten off by an alligator. Rumor is, the voice actor was Sheb Wooley (aka man who sung Purple People Eater).

Wow, Speilberg really loved that, didn't he? And his buddy Lucas, too.

Another generic sound I've heard a lot over the years is an old Doom door_open clip, a kind of "swish-kachunk" sound.

It was their sound editors. It was put in as sort of an inside joke, or more like a secret handshake.
