You're a *****.

Of course if it were mailed two days ago the timing's about right.

You cut me deep on that one.

Didn't check the postage, but should have. Timing is pretty close.

I need a book to read.

Smiley: frown

Been reading a lot lately. Scifi/fantasy type stuff. Gotrek and Felix, finally picked up the first book in the Discworld series, Foundation by Asimov, Speaker of the Dead.

I need more, I need stuff that doesn't suck. Like the time DSD recommended George. R. R. Martin and that god awful series of books. Smiley: mad

If you like mysteries/thrillers you might want to check out a couple of writers: Nelson DeMille (thanks Celcio!) and Lee Child.

DeMille writes more serious-themed mysteries, but his protagonists' interior monologues are hilarious.

Child writes pure escapist macho ubermensch stories about the modern-day gunslinger type hero, setting things right and then moving on.

Demille is pretty good. I just talked myself in to reading Dan Brown, and the books are pretty well written even if the movies are and will be ******

Well what do you expect for a Lancashire Lad.

When I want easy escapist reading, Lee Childs is my 1st choice (Harlan Coben 2nd). Good plots, action, characterisation and usually good plots.

I often wondered how his books seem in the USA - from here he seems to capture a very American feel to the places and people - better than I'd expect from an Englishman.

And yeah Jack Reacher is cool as fUck, but Myron Bolitar (one of Coben's main characters) is as credible but with a dry-as-hell wit.

He writes American characters very well, in fact. Once in a long while he'll throw a Britishism in the mix, and it's somewhat jarring. Overall, though, very consistent.

I haven't read any Coben. I'll look for his stuff next time I'm a-bookin'.

May I recommend Shards of Faith?

It's an inexpensive and short read but it'll last you hopefully until you find something else to read.

Btw one of the reviews on that site is from Pikko, just incase I alone can't persuade you.

Oooh so Coben is Childs and DeMille's love-child then. Sweet, I'll have to check it out.

Recently, I started reading "The Bourne Ultimatum." I got about 150 pages into it before I put it down, never to touch it again.

For some reason, the way that Ludlum uses italics to stress words in his dialogue, and his overuse of the exclamation point, makes me envision all of the characters in the book running around in circles, waving their hands in the air and yelling "The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Ahhhhhh!"

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

It's nerdy. It's well written. It's main character would fit right in here. I have a hard time putting it down.

Hey Bodhi...You ever read anything by S.M. Stirling or Harry Turtledove?

Wait, what?

I love A Song of Ice and Fire, I'm curious as to what problems you have with it. Smiley: lol

As for good sci-fi/fantasy books, C.S. Friedman is a damn good author. I recommend her "Coldfire" trilogy, it starts with the book Black Sun Rising. Though, knowing you, you're not going to read it after the above comment. Smiley: glare

After having read the latest book in the series, I'm actually starting to agree with you!

But anyway, John C. Wright has written a very good scifi trilogy "Golden Age". Sort of a space opera but a lot better!

And ofcourse, if you've just begun on reading Pratchett, you should be in for a long ride. If you like it anyway, especially the first ten or so are great. The later ones are often hit and miss though.

If you like something bizzare and different, my favorite book of all time is House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.
