Doh! Forgot the linkage ...

LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.

Wasn't there a movie like this back in the 80's?

Probably methane or high levels of carbon monoxide stirred up from the cavern.

Mind you, I haven't actually READ the links yet. I'll do that when I get to work.

OO yeah. Even Carbon Dioxide trapped in underground air pockets in very strong concentration can kill hundreds of people, or make them very sick indeed, if the pocket is breached and the gas let out all at once.

Perhaps a gas was released from the interior of the meteorite, or perhaps the water is not actually boiling, what is happening is that an underground gas pocket has been breached, and is now percolating up through the water in the crater.

Maybe - or maybe the heat from the meteor striking did actually boil the water. Boiling mud could certainly account for the smell.

I didn't read the articles, but am guessing Hydrogen Sulfide is the culprit.

Well, that's a pretty distinctive odor. I think they'd have been more descriptive.
