The Patriots officially have an asterick next to their Super Bowl victories. Cheaters, pure and simple.

Seriously, is there a reason if you aren't from Taxxachusetts to root for these a$$holes anymore? I told you guys back when the Red Sox won the pennant they'd be insufferable. Their role in life was to be the perennial loser, the team that just missed out on a championship-- barely. The Patriots were building a dynasty at that same time, and now? The Celtics are quite possibly an NBA finals contender. The only piece that's missing is the Bruins making a comeback.

Bostonians are a$$holes, every last one of them. I hope they die. And, yes, Timothy, that includes you.

I imagine plenty of other teams are doing it, just haven't been caught yet. You gotta wonder why they bothered with the Jets though, they should be able to beat them half asleep with the second stringers.

Ahhh, the old "Sure they got caught, but I'm certain everybody else is doing it as well," excuse. You're a prime example of why sports suck as much as they do these days. You prolly like Barry Bonds and think NBA ref point shaving is perfectly acceptable too.

Actually, I can't stand Barry Bonds, and I don't bother watching the NBA. Basketball is for pussies.

As for them getting caught, I think it's a good thing. I'm sure the new Commish will punish them harshly to send a message to other teams. However, I don't see it as that huge of a deal. It's not like they snuck on the team bus and confiscated a playbook or anything...

Nahhh, the worst punishment they'll get is the loss of a second round draft pick next year. What we can all hopefully pull together for is that Randy "Clubhouse Cancer" Moss will implode and drag New England down like he has with every other team he's played for.

Can we agree on that, Kakar?

100%

The funniest thing this weekend was watching the New England game and seeing Moss put up 100+ yards and a touchdown. The Pats fans I was watching the game with were slobbing his nob like nobody's business, one of them even had the gall to call Moss the greatest receiver ever, as if he'd never heard of Jerry Rice.

I laughed heartily and told the kid he was obviously smoking crack, and to wait till there was one weekend when Moss was sufficiently covered by a capable DB and subsequently throw a temper tantrum and give up going to practice or even trying in a game. The one difference there is I don't see Belichick putting up with that nonsense. We'll soon see I'm sure.

The league has the money to put a ref in the coach's box. Sadly, it looks like they are going to have to do it.

The league's policy toward players is harsh: if you take a supplement which says it contains only X, Y and Z - all of which the league allows, and you take it and show up positive for a banned substance, you miss games (3 or 4 for a first offense, I think). And now the coach says he failed to comprehend the rules - okay but you have to pay a price. And it should be missing games.

My team now has to play the Patriots at New England this week. Personally, I would send the play in with a player - offense and defense - every time. And on defense when you can't then and only then use the signals. Minimize the opportunities.

That said, unless the league nails the Patriots hard for this offense, I expect everyone to be stealing signals in a very short time.

come on! in those super bowls, they started off great and got worse in the second half. that doesnt jive with breaking down signals at half time.

if you want to put asterisks, maybe they should put one besides the chargers record, since merriman had been using steroids. or maybe besides the broncos since they were over the cap the 2 years they won it all.

the only reason the patriots are taking so much flak is because they have been so good for so long, that people are sick of hearing about them. noone ******* when shanahan admitted to stealing signals. noone cared about miami trying the same thing last year, or mangini trying to steal the pats playbook before he left

normally i would agree, but the guy did take a 6 million dollar pay cut. i think he might be at the point where he just wants a ring, and if he becomes a perimeter player than so be it.

yes the red sox are insufferable

The whole thing is bullsh'it, and the NFL is cracking down on a top rank team to make an example. It's no freakin' surprise that NFL teams study Tapes, and -not- just of actual gameplay. You would have to be an idiot to think otherwise.

They're trying to crack down on Video recording on the sidelines. Big deal. Patriots are by far not the only team in the NFL that has video equipment on the sideline. Almost every NFL team has a video crew on staff for the sole purpose of recording every game so they can study the opponents.

The NFL is on a warpath this year, and this is just the outcome of NFL councils cracking down on small rules to make the point that they're paying attention. The Patriots are a big target because of their 3 Rings and high profile. Nothing has changed, Belichick hasn't done anything different over his entire reign as head coach of the Pats. They win games because they do things different than other clubs in the league. The last 2-3 seasons is testament enough that they aren't perfect, otherwise they would still be winning Superbowls every season.

Personally I can't wait to see what goes down between Mangini and Bellichek next time they meet at mdifield.

Also, this is being blown totally out of proportion. Not only are there more teams out there stealing signs, but the advantage it provides isn't tht great. It can't really be helpful till later in the game, becasue it takes time to watch the video and match up the signals. Then there's the fact that the players still have to execute physically. It's totally comparable to stealing signs in baseball; you may know that the hook is coming, but you still have to hit it.

They're going to lose at least a second round pick, probably a second and forth or fifth. I think they should be hit with a huge fine and Bellichek should be barred from the facilities for a week.

The baffling thing, though, is why the Pats would do this. Bellichek is obviously an obsessive minutiaphile(I made a wurd), and I actually think he needs help.

Yeah. But there's a huge difference between videotaping a game so you can examine the players movements and positions for future games and running a live feed of the opposing teams coaching staff so you can give your team a live advantage while playing. One is perfectly legal. The other is a violation of the rules.

And in football, the advantage of knowing what sort of play the other team is about to use is absolutely *huge*. Unlike baseball where an individual still has to perform regardless of what the other team does, football is entirely about picking a play that moves your entire team in a particular pattern and hoping that that selection proves advantageous. Individual effort counts, but over time it's the positions and movements of the entire team that determine success. Even just knowing if the other team is going to blitz or not half the time will provide enough advantage to tip the balance of a game.

Losing a draft pick is a lame slap on the wrist. Strip them of their title and perma-ban them all from the NFL. And fine them. With jail time.

Meh. I remember hating the Cowboys in the 90's for the same reason most people are hating on the Pat's nowadays. Up until this week, however, Bob Kraft had prided himself in creating a "respectful" football orginization.

And up until now, there was little reason to think otherwise.

This DOES put a huge mark on their record and gives fodder to everyone who's ever lost to the Pats?

Cheating? Well, it depends on your interpretation of the rules. We've been interpreting them differently than everyone else since before we won our first Superbowl. Just ask anyone in Oakland about the "Tom Brady" rule.

The quickest and most effective way to end such infractions in the NFL would be for the team the violates the rules to forfeit the game in which they were caught cheating. THAT would get their attention in a heartbeat, and convey to every other team, just how determined the league is to put an end to this sort of thing.

It'll never happen though.

I live in Boston and this is all over sports talk radio. WEEI is reporting that the Pats will lose two consecutive second round pics.

Bellichek states that he was video taping for future games. The league rule states no taping of anything that can be used in the game being played. Which interpretation is correct, only the league can decide.

I have two questions though:

First, can the NFL prove beyond a resonable doubt that Bellichek was using the video footage against the Jets?

Can Bellichek prove beyond a reasonable doubt he wasn't using the footage against the Jets?

NO and NO

I think as punishment Belichek's playbook should be copied and sent to every team on their schedule. That, or have a live video feed of the Patriot's sideline projected on the Jumbo-Tron so everyone can see their signals. And, if we're lucky, catch them picking their noses or scratching their ear-hairs.

In a sort of comparable story, a racing team has been fined $100,000,000 for spying. How 'bout that kind of punishment? Think a team would ever steal signs again, using video equipment, because that's actually the illegal part of the Pat's scheme, if the team faced a nine-digit fine?

I'd prefer the guy be required to wear a suit for the rest of the season, for games, at practice, the whole lot. He's the only coach I've seen that not only wears sweatpants but also wears dirty sweatpants! I understand that the dude works like 52 hours a day but you'd think the trainer could come in and wash his clothes every once and a while.

Well, here's the headline on ESPN.com:

Quote:
Belichick Fined; Pats Lose Pick
Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

in hindsight this might be the greatest thing to happen to the pats this year. nothing says motivation like people accusing you of being unable to win without cheating.

Absurd overreaction. Beat your wife, no problem, have a guy with a camcorder at the game...well now that's serious.

Beating your wife doesn't hurt the integrity of the game, though. Please, for the love of God, consider the integrity of the game! Oh, and never mind Shawne Merriman going to the Pro-Bowl last year after being suspended for steroids, because he plays for the league's darlings. New England is suffering the backlash of being too good for too long now.

Seriously, though, Leonard Little kills people. He signed a three year extension last year.

Honestly, I'd rather they just take the win from us. That way, when we win the Superbowl again this year, "cheating" couldn't be attached to it.

Oh well, let's focus on San Diego.

And BT, I'll take your Leonard Little, and raise you a Ray Lewis.

$250K for pleading guilty in a double homicide case...

First off, lots of people here thought he shouldn't have been in the pro-bowl, for exactly those reasons. Perhaps that shows the difference of viewpoints on the issue. Whatever.

However, on the flip side, his suspension was for the first half of the year. He put sufficient stats playing for only half a season to earn a spot in the pro-bowl. He was caught cheating. He paid his price. He came back and performed as a player. At some point, you have to recognize people's abilities without continuing to punish them for past mistakes.

I just think it's absurd to argue that one person shouldn't be punished because another person was, but then after being punished was not punished some more. Isn't that basically what your *****/whine is arguing?
