Quote:
TRENTON, N.J. - The FBI arrested 11 public officials across New Jersey Thursday on charges of taking thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for influencing the awarding of public contracts, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Two of those arrested are state lawmakers, two are mayors, three are city councilmen and several served on the school board in Pleasantville, where the scandal began.

All 11 plus a private individual are charged with taking cash payments of $1,500 to $17,500 to influence public contracts, according to criminal complaints against them, said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie.

apparently it's not just the White House... although, they do get a lot more out of it.

Yeah, but who cares about New Jersey? Not even New Yorkers bother with that dump.

Man, if I had to stop and take notice every time a "bribes for public contract" case happened in Chicago, I'd never get anything done.

Our sheriff here in San Antonio was recently indicted for some good ol' fashioned corruption too.

So I thought corruption was pretty rare in the USA until I moved to San Bernardino county some years ago and started reading the local news. Apparently campaign slogans were basically variations on the theme of "I'm not corrupt. Honest. Or at least not as corrupt as those last folks in office. Boy were they awful!"

San Berdo is way out East of LA, basically in the desert, although it has some beautiful mountains, too. It is (was?) the largest county in the USA by land area (not population) and was one of two or three historic homes to the infamous Hells Angles biker gang.

I didn't even read the story.

If I wanted to protect the sterling Democratic image, I probably wouldn't go about it by citing corruption in Chicago, ya monkeytard Smiley: laugh

Nah. Most of the posters apparently aren't smart enough to realize that areas like NJ, NY, Chicago, and LA are pretty much Dem strongholds in terms of local politics. Or they do, but then somehow manage to turn a blind eye when corruption occurs and somehow assume that since it had to do with "big business" it must have really be those darn Republicans behind it all.

After all, we all know that it's always the Republicans in bed with big business, right? So they must be the ones doing all those shady deals, right? Right...?

Well, SOME posters apparently aren't bright enough to realize that not all of us defend all Dems all the time. And yes, I'm looking at you.

I know that the Asylum can be pretty harsh to new guys, but I'd like to think that people who come in and don't troll, or just act like morons wouldn't get a rate down for no real reason except that they don't post in here much..

I thought the story was post worthy in an otherwise slow day..

Yeah, city councilman takes a bribe, US Senator tries to blow a guy in an airport bathroom. Equivalent.

You're right. The city councilman taking a bribe is a much bigger deal and actually has to do with "corruption".

I assume that was your point, right?

Right, as opposed to despicable hypocrisy and a complete lack of trustworthiness or integrity. Problem is, that the GOP isn't just a group of hypocritical liars, they're ALSO corrupt. At least Barney frank tells you he likes his pages bent over.

Let's see. Misdemeanor charge for disorderly conduct versus accepting bribes. Let me think now... Which one is a bigger indication of a corrupt party...

Well, one plead guilty versus the others who have just been arrested.

I thought we assumed innocence around here? Or is that only when it's a Republican on the block? Smiley: laugh

It's only when a Republican has pleaded guilty and been convicted.

Right, gbaj?

Both parties are corrupt. Your party just happens to be in the spotlight at the moment.

Give it two years, then your ******** about the Dems will hold more merit.

You're all nothing if not consistent. ;)

Well, you were the first one to make a partisan statement on the issue. Rather quick on the draw to try and assume what everyone else really thinks of the issue.

Sure. No one else mentioned that these were Democrats. They just overwhelmingly said that it wasn't a big deal...

Is it non-partisan to avoid mentioning when your own party does something wrong? It is then non-partisan to just brush off that wrongdoing as nothing significant?

If the two elected guys had been Republicans, do you think the response would have been the same? Or do you think the very people who said it wasn't that big of a deal might have been calling it "just another example of Republican corruption" (or something like that).

You seem to be missing the fact that a lack of statement about something can be just as partisan as making a statement. Heck. I could probably list off several news events in just the last few weeks that reflect poorly on Democrats and yet magically were not mentioned by anyone on this board.

For example: Do you think that if it was discovered that the leading Republican candidate for president received significant campaign fundraising from a man who is wanted for fraud, that the denizens on this board would have *not* posted about it and made a big deal out of it?

Sometimes, the absence of talking about something speaks volumes...

The same response as was largely given in this thread: Business as usual.

Does party affiliation really make any difference when the majority view is that politics, in general, is unfathomably corrupt?

gbaji wrote:

If only you really believed that to be true.
