As many of you know, the Asylum is indeed the final arbitrators of all things arbitrated. Our collective word is law, now until the dawn of eternaty. It's what we do.

Anyways...

Which format will win the new format wars?
Blue-Ray:24 (27.6%)
HD-DVD:63 (72.4%)
Total:87

Wait 3 years for the price to be reasonable, **** will have sorted itself out by then. That or you can dust off your beta max and join a hudderite colony.

Whaaat? Blu-Ray i superior technically! For both image and sound.
How can somewhat technical people pick the inferior, hm.

Well see what format LOTR is going to be on, probably both, so thats not going to settle anything either, hopefully they pick one format settling the format war once and for all...

I thought it was going to be HD because that's what the **** industry was going with, but looking at the numbers it looks like BluRay might actually pull it off.

I'd heard that the industry had started putting its weight behind HD-DVD.

more and more companies are moving AWAY from BR and towards HD-DVD. there are plenty of reasons for this, some of it is incentive money from the Toshiba backed group, others are the fact that Sony is a nasty company to do business with and more and more people/companies are shying away from all the bad press that Sony is getting and giving them.

the BR disk has its advantages over the HD-DVD, but when you look at the total picture with company support, media support, it is still a toss up as to who will win. i hope it is the HD-DVD

I don't know. I think it had something to do with the hours upon hours of using staff to comb through the network's 12,000 workstations to see which were rootkitted [by self-installing Sony DRM] and then respond appropriately.

It's all about what the **** industry embraces. Currently, that happens to be HD-DVD.

HD-DVD because it rolls off the tongue easier, because yes, most people I've seen/met/interacted with will choose something easier to pronounce over something with better quality.

I hate to choose between Sony and Microsoft but HD DVD is going to win this one.

Blueray is better, has higher capacities. They are also expensive to make. Most importantly they have a crappy name that has no meaning and relates to nothing anyone is aware of. It sounds cool, but noone can figure out what it is by the name alone.

HD DVD makes sense, High def DVD, everyone uses DVD's, high def is a term everyone is aware of from their stereos and advertisements for HDTVs. Also Microsoft is backing HD DVD which means BIG marketing dollars.

I'd prefer Blueray myself, but it doesn't have a chance.

Unlike back in the 1980's when there was Beta vs. VHS, the **** industry doesn't carry quite as much weight as it did then, thanks to the internet. So honestly, I disagree with the opinion that HD-DVD will win because of the **** industry putting itself behind that particular format. I also disagree with the (somewhat) stated opinion that Blu-Ray will win because of the fact that more people rent Blu-Ray from Blockbuster than people rent HD-DVD from there.

There isn't a clear winner right now, if only because of the simple fact that there are too many companies backing the two different methods. Unlike the Beta vs. VHS, it's not a question of real discernable quality (for VHS it was longer tape, but crappier quality, and for Beta it was shorter tape, but higher quality) unless you really are paying attention to that sort of thing. I myself can't tell the difference between the two on a HD TV most of the time.

Honestly, I think the winner will be whichever format is able to put out the cheapest player by this or the next holiday season for shoppers to pick up. The more households you can get your player into, the bigger marketshare your product will grab when it comes to new movie releases.

Voted Blu-ray simply because they have all the momentum right now. If they keep that through the holiday season it'll be tough for HD-DVD to come back.

HD-DVD all the way. They have been advertising that forever. It seems just lately did Blu-Ray really amp up the advertising.
#21 Aug 27 2007 at 12:15 PM Rating: Decent
Blu-ray, even if only because otherwise my PS3 sort of loses a big part of the attraction.

But as someone already stated, too early to tell. Sure, Paramount now only supports HD-DVD, but analysts stated that this was way too soon to make that move.

Best quality is not a guarantee (as the VHS victory has shown), prices are a good help. Blu-ray is expensive, the player and the movies themselves.

Anybody else remember the nasal drone of the nerds who would point out that "Betamax is technically superior to VHS"? Yep - they had the lastest technology and were unrepresentative of the buying power of mass markets.

HD-DVD, dumbasses.

I'll repeat the same argument I made last time.

HD-DVD. For one reason. The customer knows exactly what they're getting. Everyone knows what a DVD is. They know that "HD" stands for "high definition". So if they buy an "HD-TV", what sort of DVD player will they get with it? Yup. An "HD-DVD".

Pretty obvious really. Maybe Bluray means HD. Maybe it's something that just runs games. Who knows? At least, that's how the average confused consumer walking into a store to buy a product will think.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but this was my first thought as well.

HD-DVD is simple. People understand it. The vast majority of consumers are morons. Blu-Ray is too complicated for them. I personally wouldn't buy either unless they dropped in price. I have way too many dvds to even think about switching over right now Smiley: lol
