(CNN) -- Three British soldiers were killed in a suspected "friendly fire" incident involving a bomb dropped from a U.S. fighter plane during a clash with Taliban militants in Afghanistan, military officials said Friday.

Is it just me or does the American military pose more of threat to allies than anyone else? Smiley: lol

"One bomb was dropped and it is believed the explosion killed the three soldiers," the ministry said.

The deaths of the soldiers, who were serving under NATO command, brings to 73 the number of British troops killed in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led offensive of 2001. Many of those have died in a recent upsurge in Taliban activity in Helmand.

Two other soldiers were wounded and air-lifted to a nearby base for medical treatment.

Except for those last 2 that we only wounded... we've managed to kill the entire British Army there?

Good get America.

You'd think we would learn not to fly fully loaded helicopters through desert mountains, too, but we *are* Americans after all.

While it is a tragedy, in situations where an air attack results in a friendly fire incident, it's usually the fault of the guys on the ground being in the wrong place. Especially in the case of bomb drops. It's not like the computer guided systems don't have programmed grid coordinates or anything...

When something like this happens, it's usually because someone either mis-identified the coordinates for the drop (bad spotting), or someone wandered into an area that was pre-identified as a bomb drop coordinate and didn't realize it. The guy's in the F-15's aren't eyeballing targets on the ground with those munitions and picking what looks to be a good spot. They're given the coordinates, authorized to drop, and then drop in the spot they're told. That information ultimately comes from someone on the ground.

That's not to say that someone didn't ***** up between the ground and the air, but you can't assume it was the fault of the guy in the plane...
