Well yes... but what they are looking at is how they adapted to climate change BEFORE they went extinct.
In general it's also relevant to look at species who survived "Mass Extinction Events". Several times in the Earth's history 95% of all species alive on the planet at the time have suddenly gone extinct. Massive meteor impacts, or continent spanning volcanic eruptions, or other catalysts have brought about global catastrophes... or just precipitated massive, fast, climate change, that has successfully wiped out most life on Earth.
Best to know what to do, and what not to do, in exciting situations like that.
